Protima
Bedi establishes her own village, called Nrityagram, for dancers
who
want to study the seven classical Indian dance forms, especially
the Odissi dance, and two martial arts dances.
The
village is built on 10 acres of land, 30 km from Bangalore,
leased/gifted to Protima by the Karnataka state
government, then headed by Ramakrishna Hegde. The students live
on campus, in the traditional Indian gurukul system. Boarding
is free. The training to be a dancer can take up to eight years.
The
Odissi dance dates back to the 2nd century B.C. and was performed
originally in temples as a sacred ritual
dedicated to the gods.
The sensuous dance movements reflect the sculptural motifs of
the temples of Orissa. |

In this year of presidential elections in the US, Siddharth Bedi
liked the Democratic candidate Bill Clinton, according to Protima:
"If [Siddharth] had to cast in his lot, it would be for Clinton.
He admits to
having smoked marijuana, he appears on TV playing the saxophone,
and has also admitted to cheating on his wife. Finally an honest
candidate!" |
