Andrea Verschuur's exclusive
report from Bombay:
Kabir's big birthday bash today (Sunday, January 15) caused a
a traffic jam in the north Mumbai suburb of Bandra, as his many
guests arrived at the trendy restaurant Seijo & The Soulfood.
Security guards, autorickshaw drivers, private chauffeurs and the just curious
saw the more than 150 partygoers, including Kabir's family, actors and the Bollywood "filmi" set
alight from their limousines to join the fray.
Among the many guests were Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia, Jackie Shroff, Natasha
and Fardeen Khan, Gayatri Iyer and Kunal Ganjawala, Lara Dutta, Soni Razdan and
Mahesh Bhatt, Alyque Padamsee, Kim Sharma, Milind Soman, Ajitabh and Ramona Bachchan,
Zafar Hai, Gerson Da Cunha, Farah Ali Khan, Zarine Khan, Farhan Furniturewala,
Zeba and Rajesh Kohli, Kelly Dorji, Anna Singh and Jaiveer, Dolly Thakore, and
Biddu (of the Biddu Orchestra).
Kabir, dressed in a snow-white pathani, took centre stage in more than
one way, as the Indian winter sun (33 degrees Celsius in the shade) shone down
on him through the restaurant's transparent roof.
The party was hosted by Kabir's daughter Pooja and his son Adam, who decorated
the eatery with many rare private snapshots of the Bedi clan, stage pictures,
posters and movie stills, illustrating the often turbulent life journey of India's
first international screen star.
Kabir's elder brother Ranga travelled from Bangalore, and Adam arrived holding
hands with his girlfriend Nisha Harale.
Both Adam, in a white kurta with blue embroidery, and his mother Ixchel
were wearing outfits by designer Nisha Merchant that perfectly matched their
striking blue eyes.
A beaming Ixchel, who lives on the US West coast but has been staying in India
in recent weeks, told kabir-bedi.com that Adam and Nisha got engaged over Christmas.
Holding hands with her future daughter-in-law Nisha, she told us the engagement
will be officially announced shortly.
Nisha proudly showed off her engagement ring.
The mood was upbeat and cheerful as the guests enjoyed the pictures of toddler
Kabir with his proud parents, Kabir the schoolboy, the college athlete (already
the tallest of his class), the Buddhist child monk, and of Kabir as Othello and
Kabir as the Corsaro Nero.
There was a large picture of Kabir's parents and a wall full of snaps illustrating
his three marriages.
"Did you know Kabir could do that?" said one of Pooja's banners, strung
under a large set of photographs from days gone by, which showed a sparsely clad
Kabir at a yoga workout.
With her trademark giggle, Pooja was the perfect host for the guests, whom she
described as "just a few of Daddy's closest friends."
We also ran into Gayatri Iyer, back in her home town Bombay from her months-long
London stay to perform in The Far Pavilions. She was accompanied by her husband,
the popular singer Kunal Ganjawala.
Preity Zinta and her boyfriend Ness Wadia, both in white, arrived when the party
was already in full swing. Ness' mother Maureen Wadia was also sighted.
Fardeen Khan, in a half-open, sand colour safari shirt and white trousers, visited
the party with his wife Natasha (nee Madhwani), the daughter of actress Mumtaz.
The newlyweds had just returned from their honeymoon and were on the way to see
relatives in Uganda.
However, Fardeen said: "But we had to come here, our family has known Kabir
Bedi since ages!"
Also among the guests was Kabir's old friend Mahesh Bhatt, together with his
wife Soni Razdan, who co-stars with Kabir in Take 3 Girls.
According to Kabir, the movie is likely to be released later this year.
For some months, Mahesh Bhatt has been planning a new film about Parveen Babi,
with the working title "Woh Lamhe. For Those Who Loved and Lost".
It will be directed by Mohit Suri, and Shaad Randhava will play the young Kabir
Bedi, who was Parveen's lover from the mid to late seventies.
Nimisha, a friend of Kabir's late wife Protima, took time out between two major
exhibitions in East and West of her abstract work to visit the party.
Nimisha designed Protima's first poster as an Odissi dancer.
Actor Milind Soman arrived at the party straight from the Bombay Marathon, where
he ran a sponsored half-marathon for charity, setting a personal record of just
under two hours.
Milind had been training for the event with daily 25-kilometre runs along the
city's famous waterfront known as the Queen's Necklace, and was full
of energy at Kabir's party.
He even performed a little dance as the five-tier birthday cake was cut up!
One of the guests called out: "Are you getting married again? It looks like
a wedding cake!"
But Pooja retorted on her father's behalf: "He's married to a beautiful
life!"
Kim Sharma, who plays Noorjahan's daughter Laadli Begum in Kabir's film Taj Mahal,
turned up in jeans and a white top, the very opposite to the spoiled brat that
is her character in the movie.
Kabir's grandchildren Aaliya and Omar were playing around among the guests at
first, but the room soon filled up completely and the party continued way longer
than planned, as a good knees-up always should.
Afterwards, Fardeen Khan, his wife, and many other guests went to the Sundowner
Party in Bombay's Sea Rock Hotel, with a view of the Arabian Sea - at sunset.
