The show will premiere at the prestigious Shaftesbury Theatre at the heart of London's theatreland on April 14, 2005, according to producer Michael Ward who officially released the announcement today. Speaking under embargo with www.kabir-bedi-com on the eve of his departure for the Dominican Republic, Kabir said he is looking forward to a major stage triumph, after years of mostly making Bollywood and western films and TV shows. The show is based on a popular book by Indian-born writer M.M. Kaye who died in January 2004, at the age of 96. The stage version of the book was very dear to Kaye's heart but unfortunately she did not live to see the project realised. Set in 19th century British colonial India, the story involves war battles, treachery and intrigue as well as love and honour involving a romance between a British cavalry officer and an Indian princess who has been promised in an arranged marriage to a despotic ruler. Kabir told www.kabir-bedi-com exclusively he will play the part of Koda Dad, the role played by Omar Sharif in a 1984 TV mini-series based on MM Kaye's book, also starring Ben Cross, Amy Irving, Christopher Lee, John Gielgud, Rossano Brazzi, and Rupert Everett. Actually, Kabir was asked to play Koda Dad in the mini-series but had to turn the part down because he was still under contract for the James Bond movie Octopussy (1983). Kabir played alongside Omar Sharif in Ashanti (1979), Il principe del deserto (1989), Beyond Justice (1992), and Lie Down With Lions (1994).
