Kabir Bedi will perform in his musical THE FAR PAVILIONS
to an audience including some 80 of his former schoolmates of
Sherwood College Boarding School on Sunday, June 5, 2005.
Kabir Bedi, class of 1962, said the annual gathering of the Old Sherwoodians
celebrates the school's Founders Day both in London and at the school itself
in Nainital, India.
"Whatever alumni are in England are gathering for a special
show on June 5th," Kabir told kabir-bedi.com.
"Robert Llewellyn, our principal, all of 95, we're bringing
him down in a nice car and toasting him at the end of the performance
with a nice dinner that we're having at the Mela Restaurant."
At the lunch that follows the 3 pm Sunday matinee performance, the Rev. Llewellyn
will be waving his cane at a large group of people, which includes many VIPs,
hopefully not quite as wayward as they were as schoolboys.
"There should be I imagine about 80 people... Some coming
in from America, some coming in from around here (in the UK) etcetera.
Mind you, it's Founders Day in India as well so a lot are going
to the India celebrations, but the ones that are here are all coming
here and then they're all having dinner."
He said the group includes "somebody who is now an admiral in the US Navy
who is flying in from Washington... There's another who controls a massive investment
fund of twenty billion US Dollars, you know there's people of importance out
there."
Among those expected to be present is actor Dilip Tahil, who told the Mumbai
paper Mid-Day that "Kabir was the big hero at school, not Amitabh Bachchan
who became a star later."
But Dilip's comments prompted a chuckle from Kabir.
"Amitabh is actually four or five years older than me. So he had actually just left school when I joined it... His younger
brother was in the same class as me, so I don't know what Amitabh's popularity
was or wasn't because I wasn't there at the same time."
That younger brother is Ajitabh Bachchan, a London-based businessman, who once
told Rediff.com that "the names that were chosen for us are Bengali names.
Amitabh means the light that cannot be extinguished.
Ajitabh means the light you cannot conquer.
It also means the sun."
Kabir Bedi said Indian film legend Amitabh Bachchan will probably attend the
event in India.
Kabir Bedi has fond memories of his time at Sherwood, where he graduated at age
17, and said he is looking forward enormously to the reunion.
"We had our usual share of pranks, you know.
We'd sneak off to the town to ride horses around the lake, we'd sneak off to
the girls school, we'd do all kinds of usual schoolboy pranks," Kabir said.
"I wasn't one of the really naughty boys, there were some
really naughty boys as well."
Although he was the guest of honour at a previous Sherwood Founders Day in Dubai,
Kabir Bedi has never been back to the school itself, "I haven't, but I'm
due to be their chief guest for the Founders function next year... They wanted
me for this year and I said 'I just can't, I'm in London, I'm performing.'"
