Kabir on Saturday (July 9, 2005) paid a moving tribute
to all those who work in the film industry, realising their own
dreams and those of their audience despite the great economic
uncertainty of working in a business where there are no steady
nine-to-five jobs.
In his acceptance speech for the 2005 Asian Jewel Lifetime Achievement Award,
Kabir said that in the film business, "You never know where your next cheque
is coming from."
"People in this industry live lives of great insecurity and I've seen in
my career from Bollywood to Pinewood to Hollywood generations and dozens and
thousands of courageous individuals who put their lives on the line to be in
this profession.
People who have dared to dream and, in following that dream, have realised your
dreams and hopes and fantasies on the screens that you see," he said.
In a ceremony that began with a minute's silence for the victims of the July
7 bomb attacks in London, Kabir also thanked his parents for giving him "life
and values," his children and Nikki Bedi, "my ex-wife, for sharing
the tumultuous journey that has been my life."
Although the couple parted ways earlier this year, Kabir and Nikki are still
on friendly terms and both have spoken warmly of each other in public.
Kabir was one of two winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award, along with Assistant
Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, the most senior Asian police officer in the UK,
who is responsible for homicide investigation, serious gun crime, and organised
crime.
In the award citation, Kabir was described as "one of the most famous international
actors from India," with roles in the James Bond movie Octopussy, the US
soap The Bold and the Beautiful, many Bollywood films, and currently the West
End musical, The Far Pavilions.
The award is given annually to "outstanding Asian individuals who have made
a recognisable and sustained contribution to the social, political and economic
success of Southern Britain."
Despite the terrorist attacks a few days earlier - several of which occurred
within walking distance from the award venue - the mood was upbeat, reflecting
the determination of many Londoners not to be intimidated by these terrible events.
The ceremony, which included a Bollywood dance act, an Indian meal and a fashion
show, was held at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel on London's Park Lane.
Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a written message to the attendees that "I
strongly believe that Britain's diversity and experiences have brought tremendous
strengths and benefits to our society.
The Asian Jewel Awards are an important and unique initiative and play a very
significant role in helping appreciate and celebrate this diversity." |
