- Weekly wrap -
This week on Kabir's Italian radio show Ch@t: Sandokan and
Verdeluna discuss more serious matters, such as alcohol abuse, racism,
the generation conflict, and jealousy. But there's room for lighter
moments too, such as how a certain Mr. Philips brought television
to Mompracem and Yanez got involved in adult entertainment...

Verdeluna remembers the first time she and her useless ex-husband, Renato, The
Twit, you know... It was a warm night in late September, in the disco car park.
They ended up on the faux-leather rear seats of his sporty convertible. Did you
at least close the top, asks Sandokan. I don't think I'd have taken the time...
We are so vulnerable, so defenceless... It's like being nude. You're not a nudist,
are you, Sandokan? Are you sitting in the nude on your beach right now? If we
lived in a world of nudists, Verdeluna would be out of a job in no time. Who
would buy clothes from her shop? But in the earthly paradise there's no need
to work in the first place, says Sandokan. We all long for the earthly paradise,
a longing that can't be ext.. extish.. extinguished, like my desire for you,
Verdeluna. Come with me to the earthly paradise, and let us cavort on wild horses,
holding hands, swim in a sea where the water and the sky have no limits. And
back on shore, there's always Yanez' most excellent coffee! - And speaking of
Paradise, Verdeluna remembers her first kiss, at age 13, appropriately in an
apple orchard. She was chewing gum and taken a little by surprise. At the end
of the kiss, it was her beau that was chewing the gum. Sandokan also has an anniversary,
that of his first kiss from Marianna.
And this time, it's Verdeluna's turn to ask Sandokan to join her... for a glass
of wine in the local pizzeria!

What's Sandokan's excuse for being late today? A colony of sea lions was celebrating
the arrival of two little ones, a boy sea lion and a girl. Verdeluna says she
had a long and difficult delivery when Valerio was born, while Patrizia was already
on her way out by the time she got to hospital. - Does Sandokan ever zap around
on his TV? Well, he likes television. One day. Mr Philips arrived on Mompracem
and so liked Yanez' coffee that he sent a whole shipload of TV sets. Now everyone's
got one. TeleMompracem specialises in adult movies, like "The Pirate Always
Rings Twice," an experimental production by none other than Yanez himself.
Mompracem's TV news is played by actors, a stage drama that is always more riveting
than real events themselves. Speaking of the stage, Sandokan quotes extensively
from Shakespeare's Macbeth...
..."Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood from my hands?"
Patrizia tells Verdeluna the story of Violante and her daughter Giulia, born
in prison where the mother was serving time for theft. Violante can't accept
her baby, feeling she has already betrayed the child. Verdeluna and Sandokan
agree that Patrizia has great courage and maturity to understand such situations
and deal with them. Verdeluna is so happy with her daughter, but... the girl
has fallen in love with a much older man, and a disc jockey to boot, working
the night clubs for a living. That's all Verdeluna needs, a second Twit in the
family, and she cries out to Patrizia not to tell her such nonsense. - Now, she
is sorry for having broken her daughter's confidence. - "Conflicts between
the generations have always caused many problems," says Sandokan, the wise
man. Think of Romeo and Julia. Cook a big meal and invite the man over to get
to know him. I can give you a great Indian salmon recipe...
At the end of the chat Sandokan fires off a few more literary quotes. When Verdeluna
asks him if that's more Shakespeare, he chuckles modestly: "No, it's Sandokan!"

Today, Sandokan is the first to log on and wait for Verdeluna. There's a slight
drizzle in Mompracem, of the kind that is liked by the English, he says. Verdeluna
is happy, and her happiness to him is like mint shampoo in his hair. Sometimes
shampoo gets into your eyes, and makes you cry. - Verdeluna speaks of her three
bothers: Christian, the army sergeant now fighting in Iraq, Walter the priest,
and Vittorio, who's unemployed and lives next door. They say work makes a man
noble, but Sandokan says that all depends on the work... - But Vittorio is a
drinker, who's taken after his father. Now that the father is dead, Vittorio
continues drinking because he's never been able to show his father how much he
loved him. Sandokan knows all about that. After he lost Marianna, he set about
finishing all the whisky on his gallion...
This afternoon, Verdeluna went to see Vittorio, and found him sleeping on the
sofa, fully dressed. After waking, he burst into tears. There are men who've
never learnt to cry, says Sandokan, and they cry inside instead. Their heart
swells and swells, until one day it bursts and the tears flow. According to Sandokan
the poet, crying is "a salty cascade". Sandokan is pleased Vittorio
was finally able to ask for help. In his own case, it was Yanez who came to the
rescue, with strong coffee, wise words, and by hiding the whisky in a secret
bay. - Verdeluna's secret place is her son Valerio's bedroom, when he's away,
but when he gets back, he's always upset about the breach of privacy. Why doesn't
Valerio get a house of his own, says Sandokan. But he's my child, he's only 20,
and I'm a "mamma italiana, molto italiana"...

Tonight, Sandokan witnessed a dance of the dragonflies, and the best dancer
reminded him of Carla Fracci. The ballerina once visited Mompracem, and Yanez
became an instant admirer. He even wanted to be a dancer instead of a pirate!
Verdeluna has taken her brother Walter, the priest, to the disco, because he
needed cheering up. Verdeluna remembers the dances of an earlier age, when you
held each other very, very close, what magic! And one day, a boy she really liked
offered her a chocolate she didn't much care for. After they danced, and the
light came on, they both had their faces covered in chocolate as Verdeluna attempted
to hide the sweet... Even in those days, Walter had something of a priest in
him. and he always conforted his sister when she was suffering the pains of love.
- Now it's Walter who's suffering, because of the racist graffiti on the door
of his church. He has an assistant, Abdel, a Muslim, who isn't accepted by the
congregation. Abdel has even offered to leave so as not to cause trouble, but
Walter won't hear of it. Sandokan is full of admiration. It's easy to have faith
when things are going well, but when they're not, that's when you're really
being tested... - Let's dance close together Sandokan. I won't make you cry,
Verdeluna. I won't leave you for your friend who sits next to you in school...

The unthinkable has happened! Vanessa Paradiso, Patrizia's schoolmate and The
Twit's latest conquest, has walked into Verdeluna's house. And guess what? She
was jealous. "Renato always talks about you Madam, and whatever I do, he
says you do it better!" - She then passed out, and Verdeluna had to wake
her up again. - "Leave my Renato alone or I'm capable of anything," shouts
Ms. Paradise by way of saying thank you. - Come with me Verdeluna, away from
these petty troubles. I will show you a secret cave full of treasure, of golden
coins and precious garments. How wonderful it would be if my shop could sell
clothes that put people in a good mood, says Verdeluna. Now it's just like a
factory outlet, with clothes from two or three years ago. In fact, the shop is
just plain Out. But Sir Hugo can't be persuaded to do things differently. Just
tell him you'll sell out, says Sandokan. They talk about change, and of walking
away from an old life to start afresh. Our lives are our lives, wherever we go,
and we can't be separated from them, says Sandokan. There are no clothes that
fit you better than our Kamasutra, Verdeluna. It's the most beautiful in my cave,
and it's been waiting only for you! - What a shame it's all fantasy when you're
chatting... Not everything, Verdeluna. not everything!
