| "It's a historic anniversary. Along with Italy and Spain, Germany has been one of the main countries that made Sandokan happen, and made it the phenomenon that it was at the time and that it continues to be. The German fans have been very loyal. People in Germany have really kept up their interest... their love of Sandokan, and I am firstly extraordinarily grateful to them but also in awe of the power of the story of Sandokan and the magic created by its creators in creating a programme that had that impact. I of course was fortunate to be chosen to play the role of Sandokan and so symbolise that character in people's minds but let's not forget it was the whole team that made it happen. And what has sustained it has been the love and admiration and the perseverance of all the fans that saw it from the first moment and (that) has continued until today. There aren't many television series that 25 years after being broadcast... have had such lasting impact on people's consciousness, but somewhere I think it represented many things to many people. It represented the desire for freedom, of peoples, of individuals. It represented also being part of a larger movement. It also was a reflection of going back to nature... Just the beauty of nature affected people. I think the music of Sandokan was a huge contributory factor and also there was a certain beauty to the whole series, which of course was photographed and directed by Sergio Sollima, the director, with great excellence but I think the role of Nino Novarese who was art director - and an Oscar™-winning art director* - was really extraordinary. And it touched many people in many ways and the reasons why it touched people have endured. Of course the magnetism of the character of Sandokan himself and the love story between him and Marianna was certainly a very important emotional element to the whole thing because at the end it's a great love story as well and altogether it became a very successful mix. But you know that's my point of view. There could be other people more erudite than me, more insightful than me, greater students of cinema or (of) a phenomenon that might have other explanations for the success of Sandokan and for its enduring fascination. But that's the way it looks to me." |

| *Novarese won Oscars for 'Best Costume
Design' for "Cromwell" (1971) and "Cleopatra" (1964). He was also nominated for two more Oscars, a Bafta and an Emmy Award. |
