| KABIR
BEDI DETAILS |
|
|
| Kabir's
part |
|
Kabir
plays the 'Yeti', a mysterious man living in an old villa inside
a dark, spooky park. He lives withdrawn from the world, looks
a
little shabby, and only leaves his home after nightfall, if at
all. The reason why he lives this life of mystery and self-imposed
exile
from the world does not become clear in the film. Only the DVD
(available through Amazon UK and Amazon Germany as UK import)
contains a few
scenes
not used in the movie, which cast light on Kabir's/Yeti's
odd behaviour. The video only has the movie version
with Kabir's
very brief appearance, missing the extra scenes that explain a
great deal about Anita's relationship with Yeti. |

|
|
| Kabir's
showstopper |
|
Kabir's
appearance in Anita and Me (DVD and video versions)
only lasts a few seconds, but we see him in all his power and glory
-- but unfortunately only at night! Kabir's
scene is an important one, perhaps the most important, in the film. |

GENERAL INFORMATION |
• some quotes by Kabir from
the movie:
• Kabir to Meena:"When
I first woke in my digs in Oxford I saw a crust on the windows like frozen flowers...and
I laughed...and I liked the cold." (deleted scene)
• Kabir to Meena:"Never
could stand the heat in Delhi..." (deleted scene)
• Kabir to Meena:"You
need autumn to read Yeats...to listen to Mozart...winter to wear a barrister's
robe and wig." (deleted scene)
• Kabir to Meena:"London
was my wintery playground...endless parties...the oriental gentleman about town..." (deleted
scene)
• a few other remarkable quotes from the movie:
• Anita (voice over):"I prayed for help - for the only thing that
could help us - and he came!"
• Anita (voice over):"He handled her lifeless body like a toy in his
huge hands - not sucking her blood as I'd always feared but forcing the life
back into her."
• Anita (voice over):"The Yeti plunged into the bottomless pool, the
water murky with memories and betrayal, to save the girl who broke hearts and
couldn't swim. He saved both of us - Anita and me."
• Papa Kumar to daughter Meena:"Saving someone's life is worth a few
extra marks."
• Meena's aunt:"You live next door to rubbish, you pick up germs."
• priest at wedding ceremony:"Do you really dig this glorious woman
here? Does she set your senses on fire...fill you with the inspiration that makes
Dylan write songs, bring the kind of peace that could turn bombs into flowers?"
• priest at wedding ceremony:"So, in the sight of all our gods, I
now pronounce you two groovy people man and wife."
(I hope these quotes will give you some idea of
how good the multi-talented Meera Syal's writing is. I warmly
recommend the book! The movie often departs from the book, which
is much better anyway.) |

Syal wanted to be a mermaid in her childhood.
She only gave up practising in bath holding her breath when she realised she
would never grow a fishtail! |
