| SUMMARY |
|
It's
Christmas in the land of Silvio Berlusconi.
In the
northern city of Turin, young Dante Cruciani (Libero De Rienzo)
earns his living as a lightning fast bike courier.
Apart from being the star employee of the company Time Machine,
he moonlights as a slightly unorthodox Santa.
His father, an acknowledged
expert in opening safety deposit boxes, is in jail. Dante's
brother Mohammed runs a lively trade
in items that have fallen off the back of a lorry. After getting
into a spot of trouble himself, Dante is keen to book a one-way
journey out of Turin as a matter of some urgency. But he is in
rather less of a hurry to pay back the loan sharks who have helped
him pay for his plane ticket...
Surprisingly, Dante actually arrives
at the first stop of his journey around the world - Barcelona!
But the mysterious appearance of a bag of white powder in Dante's
luggage meets with the displeasure of Spanish customs. After
spending a brief time in jail in the company of a Spanish Santa,
now penniless Dante returns by train to Turin, where a man in
a neck collar and his lugubrious friends eagerly await his arrival.
Nina de la Serna (Vanessa Incontrada), a little coy about her
real name Nefertiti, is a pert Spanish stewardess living mostly
with her head in the clouds and is losing interest fast in her
unfaithful nearly-ex-boyfriend. Constrained by an Italian general
strike to keep her feet on the ground, she goes hunting for a
place to spend the night in Turin.
This is not an easy task given that all available hotel rooms
are booked by other stranded travellers. But to her good fortune
she runs into Tolstoy (Kabir Bedi),
the bell boy of the Grand Hotel, Dante's avuncular friend and
the devoted carer of his
goldfish, which has been widowed in an appalling act of murder.
Chief
among the rag-tag band of brothers that surrounds Dante, Tolstoy
rarely takes no for an answer. He knows what life has
in store for him, and what's more, he knows Curt Cobain!
Put up
by Tolstoy in the apartment of the absent Dante, Nina is to become
deeply involved in her host's life, help him with
his far-fetched plans, fall madly in love with him, seduce him,
and generally turn his already unpredictable existence upside
down.
In true romantic Christmas style, bad-boy biker meets airline
angel in a tale of love, crime and refreshingly non-Hollywood
sex!
In an
interview in March 2004, Kabir describes
the movie as "a modern-day love story between a vagabond
and an air hostess." |

part |
|
Kabir is
playing the part of 'Tolstoj', a bell boy at the 'Grand Hotel',
a hotel in a Northern Italian town.
Kabir about his part:"I play the character of a hotel
porter called Tolstoj, who is like a father-figure to this ragged
band
and
helps them in solving their problems." |

|
|
| Kabir's
showstopper |
|
"My Italian fans are used to
seeing me play the hero, but in the Ponti-movie I'm quite an ordinary
man, a stranger who lives in a group of individualists,
almost
on the edge of legality," said Kabir in
an Italian interview on December 28, 2003 on
Capri. |

A Christmas
fairy tale full of lively but somewhat dodgy characters, filmed
with great love for detail. A band of lovable rogues, including
Kabir in one of his best character parts, come to the rescue
of a young man in need and bring the story to a happy end with
love and money aplenty. |

| INFORMATION -
QUICK BITS |
| • Right from the start, Kabir
talks enthousiastically about this
project:"Marco Ponti is the brilliant young director
of the movie." |
|
| INFORMATION -
GENERAL INFORMATION |
• Some quotes by Kabir from the movie:
• Kabir, his very first
words,
to Dante: "How's the coffee?"
• Kabir: "Love doesn't
exist!" - Nina replies: "That's why we make it!"
• Kabir: "Go see what
there is to see!"
• Kabir: "All blue,
like the sea!"
• Kabir: "My back's
going bad, my mind's losing it. Long-term memory is okay, but my short-term
one is giving out."
• Kabir: "Tons of caviar!"
• Kabir: "Don't worry,
your ass is in good hands!"
•
A few other remarkable quotes from the movie:
•
"Life is a storm and getting screwed is just a little
lightning!"
• "This discount Santa is going home!"
• "Don't you trust Santa?"
• "Go anywhere but Switzerland and especially not
Berne!"
• "Did you bring a tranquillizer?"
• A/R
is set in the northern Italian city of Turin, where director
Marco Ponti often sets his movies, as he knows his home
city well and considers it more interesting than Rome.
Ponti says: "Turin is a contradiction. It is a severe
northern town but at the same time it has a warm, southern
temperament." In Rome, what you see is what you get,
but Turin is secretive and full of mysterious, surreal
places, he says. |

PEOPLE |
• For the first time
Kabir will
be shooting a film directly in Italian.
• Gemma Graziani Vesey was Kabir's dialogue/language-coach
during filming.
• Federico Mazzi was Kabir's driver
during filming.
• Mandala Tayde, who played in
Ponti's award-winning movie Santa Maradona,
appears in this film as well. Mandala is
known to many
Sandokan fans
as the lovely 'Dora', the female lead in Kabir's TV
mini-series IL
RITORNO DI SANDOKAN/THE RETURN OF SANDOKAN (please
see also further below). •
Marco Ponti is a young director born on July 25, 1967 in
Avigliana near Turin.
•
At only 33 years of age, Marco Ponti is also a professor
of scriptwriting/media studies at the experimental Holden
School in Turin.
•
He is not related to film producer Edoardo Ponti, Sophia
Loren's husband.
•
Marco Ponti did a commercial for Telecom Italia in 2002,
with popular flamenco dancer Joaquim Cortez in the lead role.
•
Marco Ponti is part of the new wave of the Italian cinema.
After his early short fims won a number of awards, he won
widespread recognition with the successful comedy Santa
Maradona (2001), for which he also
wrote the script. This film is also set in Turin, and is
about two young graduates sharing
a bachelor pad. The landlord frequently threatens to evict
them, not in the least because they use the concrete floor
to play ball games and smash up the furniture. Their many
attempts to get regular work are usually torpedoed at the
first, and
very surreal, interview, and our men behaving badly fill
their days with endless silly discussions about literature,
women, sex and other interesting issues. One of the two then
falls in love with the stunningly beautiful actress and teacher
Dolores, but later abandons his new-found love to go in
search of his own identity. In this bittersweet comedy, Marco
Ponti shows the world of two young Italian men taking their first
steps into the real world after leaving the relative protection
of their student environment.
Marco Ponti's film was a great success inside and outside
Italy and won many awards, including "best new director" in
the Italian Oscars™.
•
The 25-year-old lead actor in Kabir's
A/R,
Libero De Rienzo, played the aspiring literary
critic Bart, one
of the two main roles in Marco Ponti's Santa
Maradona (2001). •
Libero De Rienzo is often called 'Picchio', his pet name
in Santa Maradona.
• Libero De Rienzo is born in Napoli
but lives in Rome. •
Libero De Rienzo saw his first movie set at age four - his
father was a second director working under Citto Maselli.
•
Libero De Rienzo's excellent performance
in Santa Maradona won him a 'David di Donatello', also known
as the 'Italian
Oscar™ '.
•
Libero De Rienzo also loves the stage.
•
Libero De Rienzo plays 'Dr. Innocenti' in
My House in Umbria (2003), alongside the great actress
Dame Maggie Smith.
•
Vanessa Incontrada plays the female part
in Kabir's film. In June 2003, her performance as a "new
talent" won
her an Italian award, the 'premio Giuseppe De Sanctis'.
•
Stunning Vanessa Incontrada is of
Italian-Spanish origin and was born in Barcelona in 1978. She
describes herself as "an Italian girl with a dash of Spanish
passion".
• Julia
Roberts and Juliette Binoche are Vanessa's models of
feminity and beauty.
• Vanessa Incontrada has been described
as "the bubbliest redhead on TV"! She is the co-presenter
of the weekly TV show 'Zelig Circus' on Italy's Canale 5
which attracts 8 million viewers every Friday. •
Vanessa Incontrada really wanted to become a psychologist.
• Vanessa Incontrada says she can
make a very decent Tiramisu. •
At age 17, Vanessa Incontrada began the nomadic life of a
successful model, travelling the world for two years.
•
Italian director Pupi Avati discovered Vanessa Incontrada when
she appeared in a mobile phone commercial.
•
Kabir's co-star
in IL RITORNO DI
SANDOKAN (1996), Mandala
Tayde, played Lucia, one of the female leads
in Marco
Ponti's
comedy Santa
Maradona (2001). Just for her, Ponti created
a role with an Indian-Italian background. In the movie, Lucia
has an Indian mother and a father from Naples. In fact, Mandala
Tayde was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1975.
