Even the first track of the album could turn into a major hit!
'Ek Dilruba Hai', in a convincing performance by the popular singer Udit Narayan, accompanies a party of young people on a boat in Canada. Up-and-coming musician Raja (Akshay 'Akki' Kumar in an unusual casting as a bearded rough rock star with a crew cut) is playing with his band.
Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) and Raja/Akshay flirt and dance, and are evidently deeply in love. This is a feel-good track with a fine hum-along melody.

'Pyaar Ka Anjaam' is sung by two women, Alka Yagnik and Sapna Mukherjee, and a man, Kumar Sanu. This melodious love song goes with the early scenes of Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, and Sushmita Sen, living their happy and innocent lives in Montreal before everything starts to fall apart for them. Alka Yagnik's singing carries this otherwise average track, which has been used in most of the trailers so far.

'Teri Yaad...Yaad...Yaad', at eight minutes an unusually long Bollywood track, is performed by Pakistani Ghazal singer Ghulam Ali. In June 2004, Ali flew to India from Pakistan just to record this romantic song, which belongs to Aditya (Anil Kapoor), remembering happier times with his now dead wife Aarti (Sushmita Sen).
Scenes for this song were shot at the Taj Mahal.

'Kaise Piya Se', performed by mega-star Lata Mangeshkar, is a slightly melancholic love song, one of the best on the CD, 'easy listening' the Indian way. It has perfect interaction between Lata's famous voice, the orchestra and the chorus. In the movie, Anjali/Kareena sings this song when she is beginning to fall for Aditya/Anil, who is her senior by far. She sings that she is waiting for her lover to arrive, so she can show him her love.
The CD also contains an instrumental version of 'Kaise Piya Se'.

'Ishq Chupta Nahin', a slow romantic number, is delicately performed by Abhijeet. It is a good track with an unusual rhythm and good choral support. The song was recorded on location in India with Kareena and Akshay: "It is pointless to hide [your] love, because I have been your admirer for a long time."

'Kehta Hai Kabutar', by Asha Bhonsle and Shaan, a much faster track, is something of a contrast after the previous easygoing romantic songs and belongs to a scene with Aditya/Anil's friends Dil (Manoj Bajpai) and Pallavi (Shamita Shetty), a somewhat shady couple. Recorded in the summer of 2004, this farcical track is full of double-entendre and - shock horror - confessions of infidelity. The two singers are also having a go at the "higher" circles of Aditya/Anil and Anjali/Kareena. Although jokey, the track sounds ironic, and you wonder if the two famous singers didn't deserve something better. Ending with a sigh of 'Bewafaa', you either love this track, or dive for the 'off' button. Listen to it a couple of times, anyway, and try to imagine the scene that goes with it!

'Pyaar Ki Raahein', a one-minute-long excerpt from the main theme song, 'Ek Dilruba Hai' sung this time round by Shaan as a solo, is a bit bland and sentimental. The song belongs to Raja/Akshay Kumar.

'Drum Beat', the final track, is an instrumental item belonging to rock musician Raja/Akshay playing his drums. No hit in its own right but worth a listen.

And now for the piece de resistance - 'Ek Bewafaa Hai', performed by Sonu Nigam and a large chorus. "What would you do if he who loves you betrays you?" This track is a feisty, rock remix of the slower track 'Ek Dilruba Hai', with lots of electric guitars and a large orchestra. In true eighties pop style, you can't resist swinging along!
Even before the movie's release, many listeners - if not all critics - were so delighted by this track that it is already being regarded as a classic. This big song and dance act was shot in the Mumbai studios in October 2004 as the final song sequence of the movie. It is Raja/Akshay Kumar's big stage appearance as the lead singer, backed by a 40-strong chorus line flown over from Europe just for the occasion. The song is set at the end of the movie. Akshay has a highly successful career as a pop/rock fusion singer, and directs this vocal complaint about unfaithfulness to 'his' Anjali/Kareena, sitting among the audience with her husband Aditya/Anil and his friends Dil/Manoj and Pallavi/Shamita.

Of course, as in any good Bollywood movie, there is the obligatory waterfall song scene, in which Raja/Akshay even plays the harmonica...

'Bewafaa' is an album with innovative and very rhythmical tracks, romance, and one really good popsong. It is bound to be an immediate success for the composer duo Nadeem Shravan and lyrics writer Sameer.
Some of the tracks will make sure the film will attract a large and enthusiastic audience.
According to rumour, and the trailers, Kabir's film Bewafaa will be just as good as the music!

SUMMARY   Bewaafa is the story of two sisters and about the relationship of a young woman to a much older man - while she is also befriended with the 'love of her life'.

INDIAFM - PREVIEW/STORY - DECEMBER 2, 2004
"Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) is the younger daughter of her Canadian mother (Nafisa Ali) and her Indian father (Kabir Bedi) living in the city of Montreal, Quebec.
She shares a hale and hearty relationship with her parents but has a secret to hide.
And she reveals this secret only to her elder sister Aarti (Sushmita Sen).
The secret is her love for a budding musician Raja (Akshay Kumar).
Raja is not a rich man but that does not deter Anjali from loving him.
Aarti assures Anjali and Raja that she will convince her parents of their true love.

But unfortunately fate has different plans for them. Aarti passes away on the birth of her twin babies. Circumstances force Anjali to marry Aarti's husband, Aditya Sahai (Anil Kapoor).
With the much older and mature Aditya Sahai, Anjali migrates to New Delhi.

Aditya is a business tycoon who hardly finds any time for his sister-in-law turned wife Anjali or his two lovable daughters from Aarti. Anjali fulfills every role asked for her by the society but cannot bridge the gap between herself and Aditya. She finds herself in a marriage that has no compatibility but only compromise. Her only source of solace are her two endearing stepdaughters.

Amidst all this, one fine day Raja who is now a famous fusion singer walks back into her life.
Suddenly Anjali is torn between two men - her indifferent husband and her ex-lover. By the time Aditya wakes up to reality, Anjali has embarked on to an extra-marital affair with Raja.
And thereby she is tagged as a Bewafaa - The Unfaithful.

How Anjali negotiates her relationship with Aditya and Raja as also Dil (Manoj Bajpai) and Pallavi (Shamita Shetty) who are Aditya's close friends and confidantes forms the basis of the second act of Bewafaa.

According to Yahoo India news from June 10, 2003 (offline), "Anil Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor play an ill-matched couple pushed by circumstances into a marriage of convenience."
Kareena's film character has an extra-marital relationship.
According to Manoj Bajpai, "Bewafa is a film about modern marriages and Shamita Shetty and I are a flamboyant Generation Now couple".

KABIR BEDI DETAILS
Kabir's part   Kabir has a supporting role in Bewaafa. He plays 'Mr. Behal', an Indian who is married to a Canadian (Nafisa Ali) and lives with his two daughters Aarti and Anjali in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Kabir's showstopper   Kabir has eight scenes in Bewafaa:
Scene 1
Right at the opening of the movie. Mr. Behal and his wife at their morning prayers.
Lovingly Kabir tells his Canadian wife about the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and in real life an ancestor of Kabir's. Kabir'swarm smile at the end of their conversation has unfortunately been cut short in post-production.
Scene 2
At the airport, Mr. Behal and family greet daughter Aarti, five months pregnant, who is on a visit from Delhi.
A good-looking Kabir is in a black pullover as he greets his elder daughter.
Scene 3
The Behals at home, overjoyed on hearing they are to be grandparents.
Kabir dances, a rare sight! Unfortunately Kabir's dance comes across a little wooden, and reminds us of his Isola days.
Scene 4
Mr. Behal and his wife in a hospital waiting room. Aarti has just passed away during the premature birth of her twin girls Pooja and Gauri.
A silent and grief-stricken Kabir sits next to his wife as Aditya and Anjali arrive from the airport. Kabirsays Aarti has left behind twin girls.
Scene 5
The Behal family at the memorial service for Aarti.
Kabir sits in white mourning clothes in the fully packed temple, at the end of a long row of mourners. All are silent. Raja has the courage to come and pay his respects for the deceased, turning around to look at the mourners including Anjali and Kabir. Kabir is the only one to follow Anjali from the temple as she turns to soothe the two crying babies being held by a nanny. Kabir looks at the scene and says nothing.
Scene 6
At the Behals' home. Widower Aditya, maddened by grief, won't speak to anyone. and pays no attention to the twins. Mr. Behal and his wife urge their daughter Anjali to think hard about her future and say they will support her whatever decision she takes.
Kabir is very kind to his daughter, leaving the room so she can make up her own mind. Clearly his daughter's welfare is of paramount importance to him. He and his wife leave Anjali to reflect on her own.
Scene 7
Canada, at the registrar's office. In a very un-lavish ceremony, Anjali marries Aditya. With Anjali's parents standing behind them, they sign the wedding documents. Mr. Behal holds one of his granddaughters in his arms while his wife holds the baby's twin sister. Kabir stands silently.
Scene 8
New Delhi, at the Sahani family villa. The Behals have just flown over from Canada and are making a stopover on their way to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where they will pray and give thanks for the wellbeing of their only surviving daughter. They are happy that Anjali has been looking after the children for three years and has solved all of the family's problems - but how wrong they are!
Kabir is the proud grandparent of his twin granddaughters, who clearly love him very much.

With stunning sets, groovy music and breathtaking costumes, BEWAFAA should have been a showstopper, but it is let down by a lame script that even Kabir Bedi, Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor can't kick any life into.

Shot in Montreal, Quebec City and New Delhi, director Dharmesh Darshan's latest movie has stunning scenery and opulent sets that won't disappoint you if you're looking for some great visuals.

Add Saroj Khan's whirling choreography and Nadeem-Shravan's soundtrack, surely the karaoke favourite of the month, and you're going places.

Throw in W.B. Rao's very sensual camera work, the stunning costumes - although knocked by the Mumbai critics as merely trendy, Kareena Kapoor's and Sushmita Sen's saris are out of this world - and you have something to drool over.

And with an a-list cast and Kabir Bedi as a loving and loveable granddad, this movie has it all.

But while the film will give you a good three hours of roller-coaster entertainment, at a more critical level it is a let-down.
Steeped in the Bollywood tradition of a clash between modernity and Indian tradition, the movie is about Karina Kapoor's choice between personal happiness with her lover - Akshay Kumar as the hip fusion singer Indian Raja - and doing the right thing for her family by marrying her brother in law (Anil Kapoor) after her sister (Sushmita Sen) dies while giving birth to twin daughters.

The only problem is, Karina's Anjali is not making any choices at all.
For just all but the last 10 minutes of the film, she looks like a startled rabbit caught in the headlights of her hubby's Mercedes, but neither says nor does a great deal about her predicament.
And when she finally does choose - she stays with new husband Anil Kapoor for the children's sake - she comes across as lame and incredible because her supposedly overwhelming love for the twins has never been made clear.

The movie's moral is old hat to Indian as well as Western audiences.
The action is painfully slow even by three-hour Bollywood standards, and driven mostly by the (excellent) music, giving the film a video clip-like quality.
Manoj Bajpai and Shamita Shetty's baddies provide no comic relief, but just repugnance.
The dialogues are awkward and much of the acting is wooden.
Unfortunately this even goes for one of Kabir's very rare on-screen dance acts - one critic said it has to be seen to be believed, and that wasn't meant as a compliment.

The scenes where Kabir Bedi does excel - for instance his grief-stricken appearance at his daughter's funeral, clad in traditional white mourning dress - are too few and far between, and on at least one occasion the beginnings of his warm smile don't survive the cutting table.

And why is Kabir Bedi educating his Canadian wife
(Nafisa Ali) about Guru Nanak (the founder of Sikhism and his ancestor in real life) after at least 30 years of marriage? This is yet another illustration of how the actors are imprisoned by an awkward script that leaves them no room for improvement.

Kareena Kapoor is most convincing as a young girl frolicking among the Quebec autumn leaves, but invites little empathy as a neglected and unfulfilled New Delhi socialite.

Sushmita Sen is a warm and loving elder sister, but a bit of an intrusive busybody as well, and Anil Kapoor's cold and distant "businessman" husband undergoes far too fast and miraculous a conversion into caring and laid-back father and entertainer.

Finally, Kumar's sermon at the end of the film, showing his acceptance of Anjali's choice against him, is far too obviously a device to let him exit gracefully to generate the least bit sympathy - and more's the shame, because his rock singer character is by far the most lively in the movie.

Miss!
MISS!
eek!
In all, you'll have a good time seeing BEWAFAA if you're there for the show.
But don't look at the film too critically or you're likely to be disappointed.

It was built in 1941 and has been classified as a heritage building. The station is famous: On January 30, 1948 Nandlal Mehta barged in at 17:45 to report the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The F.I.R. (abbreviation for the legal term "First Information Report". In India, this has to be filed in case of an (alleged) legal offence with the officer-in-charge at the police station of the concerned area) with the allocated number #68 is written in Urdu. - 36 years later, the F.I.R. for the assassination of Indira Gandhi was lodged there, too, including an eyewitness account written in Hindi. Both documents are still filed in the station's archives.

As the film is about two men and a woman, it could be yet another love triangle; however, Darshan disagrees: "There are moments that seem like a triangle but it's not necessarily one!" Darshan explains further that Bewafaa is not a bold film: "There are no sexy shots in the promos. Maybe the title gives you that impression. The film is bold in its theme but not in its treatment." Darshan explains Kareena Kapoors backless song-and-dance scene as "a lonely moment where Kareena is singing to herself and [it] is an extremely aesthetic shot." Darshan says about the main stars: "[Kareena Kapoor] always had a girlie image. You'll see her as a woman in Bewafaa. She's got a very powerful role." - And Sushmita Sen? "She's playing a very sensitive character of an up-market Delhi lady. Contrary to what people may expect, I've given her a very soft look and personality." "Anil [Kapoor] has a fantastic role in Bewafaa. If the film works and people like him, this could open a new chapter in his career. Akshay Kumar is playing a very today's guy. Talking to trade analyst Taran Adarsh/Indiafm, Darshan explains some details about Bewafaa: "I guess, people are adding two and two together because 'Bewafaa' means 'unfaithful'. But the similarities [with the Hollywood hit 'Unfaithful'] end there. Neither is my film a thriller, nor is it a sex-based flick. It's a film for the families. Believe me, it's not even remotely similar to 'Unfaithful'." Darshan wasn't sure if Kareena Kapoor could carry off the role in the movie when he finished writing the script: "It was Boney [producer Boney Kapoor] who first insisted that I sign Kareena for the role. I've known Kareena well enough. After all, I have had the privilege of directing her elder sister [Karishma Kapoor] in Raja Hindustani first and Haan… Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya later. [...] At that point of time, Kareena was too busy with numerous assignments. All the same I was told that she tends to go overboard at times as an actor. She needs to be controlled," he pauses for a while, "When I look back, I don't think anyone could've performed the role better. This is a landmark film in her career."
»February 12, 2005 - Release date February 25, 2005 confirmed. Distribution deals are successful all over India. The movie is in popular demand, the soundtrack is ruling the music charts. Last week there were trade rumours that the release would be postponed until someday in April 2005, because of the India-Pakistan cricket matches in March - however, the producers will certainly make use of Bewafaa's popularity right now. The promotional trailers are excellent - there are a lot of scenes with hot star Akshay Kumar, a wonderful Sushmita Sen and even a bath tub scene starring Kareena Kapoor... 'Akki' Kumars important song sequence, towards the end of the film is spectacular.
»February 12, 2005 - Kareena Kapoor says in an interview with Vickey Lalwani/Bollyvista: "Whatever may be the fate of Bewafaa at the box-office, I shall always treasure this film." And how would Kareena react if her own boyfriend would cheat on her? Would she forgive and forget? "No way. I neither forgive nor forget. I am the last person to be disloyal to anybody." And what about her backless scene which already causes such a stir? Kareena laughs: "Just enjoy it!"
»February 13, 2005 - IANS reports that unfortunately no romantic films will be released in India on Valentine Day - a missed opportunity. However, distributors and exhibitors are all looking forward optimistically to the release of Bewafaa later this month.
»February 17, 2005 - If Bewafaa succeeds at the box office, its soundtrack will surpass the sales of the Shah Rukh Khan/Preity Zinta/Rani Mukherji starrer Veer Zaara, announces Box office today. Even without a supporting box office hit the Bewafaa soundtrack could become a #1 album, that extraordinary are the sales right now.
»February 20, 2005 - Planetguru writes in a feature article about Hollywood's waning influence on the Indian film industry that Bewafaa will probably be the right film at the right time: Hollywood copycat films and the skin flicks of the last few months fail to endear moviegoers. Perhaps now the time is right for an intense relationship drama like Bewafaa?! (release scheduled for February 25, 2005), which has an excellent soundtrack and Anil Kapoor in a pivotal part. The movie will also be crucial for Kareena Kapoor. Socha Na Tha will be released on the same day as Bewafaa. Its 'pure' and romantic story attracting mostly young audiences will form a perfect foil for Bewafaa.
»February 21, 2005 - Kareena Kapoor talks about Bewafaa in an interview with Subhash K Jhai: "I'm totally transformed in the film. Incidentally, I wear only saris in Bewafaa and also in Priyadarshan's next film. One can be a youth icon in a sari.[...] The film is very contemporary in feel. It's been beautifully shot in Canada and though it does address itself to issues such as the sanctity of marriage and family, it isn't an old-fashioned film. I've never done a role like Anjali in Bewafaa. It's a complete film; the heroine's role is an entire gamut of emotions. If I may say so, I've risen to the occasion."

»February 22, 2005 - Most producers try to sell their films to distributors keeping quite stumm about their products - however, in an unusual move, producer Kapoor showed Bewafaa to all its distributors prior to its release - and they seem to have liked what they saw - a lot! Bewafaa will surely be a hit with the audiences, too - the sets are lavishly decorated and the story is well told. "The songs are also a treat to watch," a distributor said. He adds: "The biggest plus point about the film is that it has been made keeping the Indian audiences in mind and has been made in chaste Hindi." - Six other medium-budget films will be released against Bewafaa but are not considered a threat. Director Darshan's comment: "...the audiences are important to me and I make films for them."
»February 23, 2005 - Director Darshan talks about the onscreen chemistry between Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor in an interview with Bollywood Trade: "I was very firm with Kareena from the beginning that I wanted her to have a great relationship with Sushmita, because if the two were not comfortable with each other, the bonding of the two sisters would not come across on screen, which was the basis of the film. Sushmita was wonderfully gracious about extending a hand of friendship despite the fact that Kareena plays the central character and she has a special appearance in the film. Fortunately for the film, two hit it off very well with each other, making great on-screen sisters."
»February 23, 2005 - Indiafm reports today that director Darshan shot scenes for the song "Yaad...Yaad...Yaad" on location at the Taj Mahal: "I wanted a feeling of posterity and pathos for the song. Taj was the ideal choice."
»February 25, 2005 - Bewafaa is internationally released today.
»February 27, 2005 - Director Darshan talks about filming Bewafaa in an interview with IANS: "It has taken two years to be precise, six to nine months more than usual but that has got nothing to do with me. Let's not forget that it is a star-studded film and the producer had his own problems. I have followed the trend and made the film in only 90 days. I have not re-shot a single scene or a song in the film."
»February 28, 2005 - A couple of days after the release of Bewafaa, director Dharmesh Darshan ties the knot very quietly in a ceremony on Sunday evening, February 27, 2005. Indiafm reports that it is an arranged marriage with Dharmesh's approval. He marries Bindya, the daughter of family friend. Three cheers for Bindya and Dharmesh on the occasion of their marriage!
»March 2, 2005 - Despite mostly bad reviews in India and beyond, Bewafaa opened well in Mumbai and Delhi, and excellent in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurastra and Nizam. It did less well in East Punjab. Bewafaa also opened well in the UK and in the US on its first weekend.
»March 2, 2005 - Bewafaa opened above average during its first weekend at the British box office, radiosargam reports today: "It collected an impressive £150,465 (about 287,810 US Dollars) during the weekend and entered the British box office charts at number 16."
»March 3, 2005 - Producer Boney Kapoor explains why he didn't show Manoj Bajpal often in the Bewafaa promos: "Manoj is a good actor and has worked hard in 'Bewafaa' but he comes in only in the second half, so how wise is it for me to show him in the romantic promos of the film? In fact, I've hardly publicized my own brother, Anil."
»March 14, 2005 - Newkerala.com reports: "Bewafaa benefited from a good opening and may end up being classified as 'average'."
»April 4, 2005 - Director Dharmesh Darshan and his wife Bindya have mutually decided to separate, after only about 8 weeks their marriage, arranged by their parents, will be dissolved, according to indiafm today.
