The unthinkable has happened! Vanessa Paradiso, Patrizia's schoolmate and The Twit's latest conquest, has walked into Verdeluna's house. And guess what? She was jealous. "Renato always talks about you Madam, and whatever I do, he says you do it better!" - She then passed out, and Verdeluna had to wake her up again. - "Leave my Renato alone or I'm capable of anything," shouts Ms. Paradise by way of saying thank you. - Come with me Verdeluna, away from these petty troubles. I will show you a secret cave full of treasure, of golden coins and precious garments. How wonderful it would be if my shop could sell clothes that put people in a good mood, says Verdeluna. Now it's just like a factory outlet, with clothes from two or three years ago. In fact, the shop is just plain Out. But Sir Hugo can't be persuaded to do things differently. Just tell him you'll sell out, says Sandokan. They talk about change, and of walking away from an old life to start afresh. Our lives are our lives, wherever we go, and we can't be separated from them, says Sandokan. There are no clothes that fit you better than our Kamasutra, Verdeluna. It's the most beautiful in my cave, and it's been waiting only for you! - What a shame it's all fantasy when you're chatting... Not everything, Verdeluna. not everything!
Rai summary:
- "The Unthinkable" - Vanessa, the 'little' girlfriend of her ex, bursts into Anna's house because of jealousy, she disturbs her and then she - swoons. Anna tries to wake Vanessa up but the young woman turns nasty. Sandokan tells Verdeluna about monkeys that stole his clothes and scattered them in the jungle. Anna would like to modernize her store 'Height of Fashion' and sell clothes which put people in a good mood.

#14 - September 27, 2007
Tonight, Sandokan witnessed a dance of the dragonflies, and the best dancer reminded him of Carla Fracci. The ballerina once visited Mompracem, and Yanez became an instant admirer. He even wanted to be a dancer instead of a pirate!
Verdeluna has taken her brother Walter, the priest, to the disco, because he needed cheering up. Verdeluna remembers the dances of an earlier age, when you held each other very, very close, what magic! And one day, a boy she really liked offered her a chocolate she didn't much care for. After they danced, and the light came on, they both had their faces covered in chocolate as Verdeluna attempted to hide the sweet... Even in those days, Walter had something of a priest in him. and he always conforted his sister when she was suffering the pains of love. - Now it's Walter who's suffering, because of the racist graffiti on the door of his church. He has an assistant, Abdel, a Muslim, who isn't accepted by the congregation. Abdel has even offered to leave so as not to cause trouble, but Walter won't hear of it. Sandokan is full of admiration. It's easy to have faith when things are going well, but when they're not, that's when you're really being tested... - Let's dance close together Sandokan. I won't make you cry, Verdeluna. I won't leave you for your friend who sits next to you in school.
Rai summary:
- "Close, very close" - Walter, Verdeluna's brother, worries about actions of racism against Abdel, his muslim assistant in the presbytery, she drags him away with her to dance in a disco. Then she remembers the parties in the dark when she was 13 years old, and the boy who was snatched from her by the girl that sat next to her in school.

#13 - September 26, 2007
Today, Sandokan is the first to log on and wait for Verdeluna. There's a slight drizzle in Mompracem, of the kind that is liked by the English, he says. Verdeluna is happy, and her happiness to him is like mint shampoo in his hair. Sometimes shampoo gets into your eyes, and makes you cry. - Verdeluna speaks of her three bothers: Christian, the army sergeant now fighting in Iraq, Walter the priest, and Vittorio, who's unemployed and lives next door. They say work makes a man noble, but Sandokan says that all depends on the work... - But Vittorio is a drinker, who's taken after his father. Now that the father is dead, Vittorio continues drinking because he's never been able to show his father how much he loved him. Sandokan knows all about that. After he lost Marianna, he set about finishing all the whisky on his galleon...
This afternoon, Verdeluna went to see Vittorio, and found him sleeping on the sofa, fully dressed. After waking, he burst into tears. There are men who've never learnt to cry, says Sandokan, and they cry inside instead. Their heart swells and swells, until one day it bursts and the tears flow. According to Sandokan the poet, crying is "a salty cascade". Sandokan is pleased Vittorio was finally able to ask for help. In his own case, it was Yanez who came to the rescue, with strong coffee, wise words, and by hiding the whisky in a secret bay. - Verdeluna's secret place is her son Valerio's bedroom, when he's away, but when he gets back, he's always upset about the breach of privacy. Why doesn't Valerio get a house of his own, says Sandokan. But he's my child, he's only 20, and I'm a "mamma italiana, molto italiana"...
Rai summary:
- "Alcohol Problems" - Verdeluna talks to Sandokan about her brothers: Christian, who is a sergeant in the army, Walter, who works as a priest, and Vittorio, who is unemployed, and who has alcohol problems. Sandokan tells Verdeluna that he struggled himself with the same problem after the Pearl of Labuan had abandoned him and that his trusted friend Yanez has helped him to quit.

#12 - September 25, 2007

What's Sandokan's excuse for being late today? A colony of sea lions was celebrating the arrival of two little ones, a boy sea lion and a girl. Verdeluna says she had a long and difficult delivery when Valerio was born, while Patrizia was already on her way out by the time she got to hospital. - Does Sandokan ever zap around on his TV? Well, he likes television. One day. Mr Philips arrived on Mompracem and so liked Yanez' coffee that he sent a whole shipload of TV sets. Now everyone's got one. TeleMompracem specialises in adult movies, like "The Pirate Always Rings Twice," an experimental production by none other than Yanez himself. Mompracem's TV news is played by actors, a stage drama that is always more riveting than real events themselves. Speaking of the stage, Sandokan quotes extensively from Shakespeare's Macbeth...
..."Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood from my hands?"
Patrizia tells Verdeluna the story of Violante and her daughter Giulia, born in prison where the mother was serving time for theft. Violante can't accept her baby, feeling she has already betrayed the child. Verdeluna and Sandokan agree that Patrizia has great courage and maturity to understand such situations and deal with them. Verdeluna is so happy with her daughter, but... the girl has fallen in love with a much older man, and a disc jockey to boot, working the night clubs for a living. That's all Verdeluna needs, a second Twit in the family, and she cries out to Patrizia not to tell her such nonsense. - Now, she is sorry for having broken her daughter's confidence. - "Conflicts between the generations have always caused many problems," says Sandokan, the wise man. Think of Romeo and Julia. Cook a big meal and invite the man over to get to know him. I can give you a great Indian salmon recipe...
At the end of the chat Sandokan fires off a few more literary quotes. When Verdeluna asks him if that's more Shakespeare, he chuckles modestly: "No, it's Sandokan!"
Rai summary:
- "Violante and Julia" - Sandokan talks about the birth of two eared seal puppies and Verdeluna remembers the births of her children. Her daughter Patrizia just told her the story of Violante, a mother in prison, and of her child Julia which is only three months old. Then Patrizia confides to her mother that she has fallen in love with a dj who is 30 years old.

#11 - September 24, 2007
Verdeluna remembers the first time she and her useless ex-husband, Renato, The Twit, you know... It was a warm night in late September, in the disco car park. They ended up on the faux-leather rear seats of his sporty convertible. Did you at least close the top, asks Sandokan. I don't think I'd have taken the time...
We are so vulnerable, so defenceless... It's like being nude. You're not a nudist, are you, Sandokan? Are you sitting in the nude on your beach right now? If we lived in a world of nudists, Verdeluna would be out of a job in no time. Who would buy clothes from her shop? But in the earthly paradise there's no need to work in the first place, says Sandokan. We all long for the earthly paradise, a longing that can't be ext.. extish.. extinguished, like my desire for you, Verdeluna. Come with me to the earthly paradise, and let us cavort on wild horses, holding hands, swim in a sea where the water and the sky have no limits. And back on shore, there's always Yanez' most excellent coffee! - And speaking of Paradise, Verdeluna remembers her first kiss, at age 13, appropriately in an apple orchard. She was chewing gum and taken a little by surprise. At the end of the kiss, it was her beau that was chewing the gum. Sandokan also has an anniversary, that of his first kiss from Marianna.
And this time, it's Verdeluna's turn to ask Sandokan to join her... for a glass of wine in the local pizzeria!
Rai summary:
- "The First One" - Verdeluna talks of her first kiss when she was thirteen, in an apple orchard, and also of her encounter with Renato. Sandokan then remembers with sadness his first kiss to Marianna.

#10 - September 21, 2007

Sandokan, the New Man, has been ironing his sarongs. He likes them neatly folded in his wardrobe. So what's he? A macho or a feminist? - Wise pirate Sandokan isn't going to be pinned down in the battle of the sexes, and diplomatically declares himself to be "neutral". Pirates love to play with fire, he says. And of course the conversation turn to food... - Angry housewife Verdeluna confesses to being a little intimidated by Sandokan, the "giant paella", hot from the oven with lots of pepper, ever so sensible and still such a... hot-blooded male. - On to Sir Hugo, God of Machos, author of the Ten Commandments on How to Humiliate a Woman, who is nevertheless Verdeluna's business partner. He has 70 percent, she 30, of their fashion shop, 'The Scream'. In other words, another Twit. - Maybe he's never been taught how to be kind and courteous, Sandokan says. - He recounts how he met Marianna, the Pearl of Labuan. Sandokan, the tough guy, had no idea of love.
But as he lay at death's door, it was Marianna who nursed him back to health. And looking into her saintly eyes, he fell in love. Sandokan is certain that men are really just afraid of women, their beauty and their absolute superiority. Just look at Othello and Desdemona, for example. - Sandokan would try out and buy all the clothes in Verdeluna's shop, even the ladies', so he could spend more time with her. And don't worry about Sir Hugo, either. - Come with me, Verdeluna, and I will turn my galleon into a giant market of colours and perfumes, and you will be the boss... - Ah, what a shame that all is over when the chat is finished. Not everything, Verdeluna, not quite everything...
Rai summary:
- "Height of Fashion" - Sandokan and Verdeluna discuss domestic work and the differences between machos and feminists. Verdeluna talks for the first time about Cavalier Ugo, her associate, a big macho, and she talks about their clothes store "Height of Fashion". Sandokan talks about the Pearl of Labuan who taught him to love.

#9 - September 20, 2007

What would you cook for me, Sandokan? Come with me, to the golden beaches of Mompracem, and I will show you. I'd make you a great basmati rice with saffron, or an exquisite fish in yoghurt sauce. Sandokan's favourite dish is nasi goreng.
Ohhh Sandokan, just for a minute I really imagined I was there with you. Here it just won't stop raining. All my friends moan to me and no one has time to listen to me. But it's very important to listen, Verdeluna. Sometimes the stories of others can be great sources of wisdom to us!
Consider, for instance, the story of Brigitta, a Brazilian prostitute whom Verdeluna met at a bowling alley. You can't judge anyone unless you have truly felt their pain, says Sandokan.
Sports is next on the agenda. Useless ex-husband Renato, aka The Twit, used to take Verdeluna to see football matches, but after a while he only went there with his friends. In the evening they would both lose their voices – he from shouting at the players, and she from shouting at him.
Then – a storm erupts, with waves as high as Manhattan skyscrapers, and Sandokan has to hurry home. But the thought of Verdeluna – and the perfume of flowers on the high seas – will protect him and his little galleon as they return to port...
Rai summary:
- "Brigitta" - Today, Sandokan is cooking a meal and he invites Verdeluna to a supper on Mompracem. She talks of her encounter with a Brazilian prostitute, Brigitta. Considerations about sport: she narrates to him a soccer match, he talks about cricket. A thunderstorm interrupts the logon.

#8 - September 19, 2007

Sandokan gives chase to a swordfish, the most magnificent creature he has ever seen, and above all, it's free! No wonder he is late for his nocturnal chat with Verdeluna, even if that's as sweet as the forbidden fruit of Paradise itself.
There's a party on at Mompracem. Everyone's singing, dancing, having fun. But Verdeluna's Italian beach has been deserted by all but a handful of German tourists as summer draws to a close. It's a good job she saw the Carnival in Rio at the beginning of the year, sailing on Valerio's cruise ship. Dancing is a gift from God, says Sandokan, and dancing in Rio is two.
Roll on more song and dance, and eat your heart out Fred Astaire! Sandokan, the high priest of dance and of its mysteries, sings a little Latin song in Hindi, and now he wants a fat Cuban cigar from Yanez' beach kiosk. The couple are like flames that have found each other. Back in the real world, Verdeluna has another rant about The Twit, her useless ex-husband, and swears she'd like to lock him up im jail.
But Sandokan has done some time of his own, under the English imp... impri... imperialists, and, believe me, it's no fun at all! Every man must be surrounded by beauty. Once you have seen the colours of a butterfly, there's no way you could do it any harm. Come with me Verdeluna, and we will dance to the Carnival of Rio. But when we wake up, will it all be over?
Rai summary:
- "Rio" - Anna and Sandokan discuss the devil. Anna talks about an incident on a cruise: she got drunk and had to be carried back to her berth by her son Valerio. Her daughter Patrizia is doing volunteer work in jails, taking care of the prisoners' children. Sandokan confesses that he himself has been in jail for a short period of his life.

#7 - September 18, 2007
Verdeluna the shower soprano and Sandokan, who's as tone-deaf as a hippopotamus, talk about music. He prefers the sound of the wind in the sails of his ancient galleon; she grooves on gospel music. Verdeluna, no instrument could make such a beautiful sound as the sound of your voice...
Verdeluna remembers how her son Valerio, aged eight, decided he wanted to learn how to play the trumpet. Her ex, The Twit, wouldn't have any of it, of course. So she paid for the lessons herself. You gave him a free and limitless sea, for the river of his emotions to flow into, says Sandokan.
And speaking of water, they launch into their very, let's say...personal interpretation of Singing in the Rain. To learn to sing, you have to sing! And after discussing singing lessons, Sandokan sings his hippo lullaby, the Great Symphony of the Universe!
Come, my siren, and every time I hear your voice, I'll dive into the depths and follow you to the bottom of the sea.
Rai summary:
- "Music" - Verdeluna tells Sandokan about her dream to become a singer and of her decision to let her son Valerio study the trumpet. Verdeluna and Sandokan sing happily together and Sandokan advises her to realize her dream: to take song lessons.

#6 - September 17, 2007
Sandokan has just spent the day swimming in the sea, playing with dolphins. Stroking a dolphin is like caressing a ripe papaya... Sandokan and Verdeluna share a deep anger about the slaughter of dolphins by uncaring fishermen and Sandokan tells a story, which came to him via Yanez. A fisherman loses his young son to the sea, falling overboard after slipping from his mother's arms. He searches in vain for the child, but years later, he catches a small dolphin in his net, and after weeping bitterly over the animal's likely fate at the hands of his fellow fishermen, decides to save its life. And for many years after that moment of pity and compassion, the dolphin visits the fisherman and his wife as they rest by the seaside - and smiles...
Do you really want to breathe the fragrant air of Mompracem, Verdeluna, do you? Then come closer to me, come closer. Close you eyes, Verdeluna, the tiger is pacing around you...
Rai summary:
- "Water" - Sandokan who passed the day swimming with the dolphins, discusses with Verdeluna the slaughter of dolphins by poachers and uncontrolled fishing. Sandokan then tells the story of a fisherman who lost his child in the sea and then adopted a baby dolphin. Also, Verdeluna remembers the rescue of her children from the sea.

#5 - September 14, 2007
Sandokan, slightly delayed by a storm on the journey home to Mompracem, is treated to another tempest: Verdeluna tells the tale of how her useless ex-husband Renato, also known as The Twit, fell in love with Vanessa, her daughter Patrizia's friend. She came to a fancy-dress party thrown by Patrizia, dressed as Minnie Mouse...
Sandokan feels like a seagull, old as time itself, with one year for every wave of the ocean. But now he knows Verdeluna, he can put the pain of Marianna's loss behind him and spread his wings once again. And what about woman power? Today's women are far more combative and adventurous than men, Sandokan declares.
Verdeluna's ideal woman is her mother, who raised the family by herself after her father was run over by a gravel truck at work.
And Sandokan?
Does he really live on Mompracem, or is he sitting in a room across the street, watching her every move?
Rai summary:
- "Minnie" - Anna tells of Renato's encounter with Vanessa, his 'little' fiancee, at a fancy-dress ball, she was dressed as Minnie Mouse. Then Anna remembers her parents: her mother who was a cleaner in hotels and her father who died on a building site, crushed by a gravel truck.

#4 - September 13, 2007
Sandokan, ever the fast and modern animal, is sending an e-mail to his friend Yanez, who now runs a cigar import-export business in Cuba. Sandokan is sitting on the beach of Mompracem, his ageing laptop plugged into his home telephone. Computers are as indispensable as five o'clock tea! But they also have a habit of falling overboard: last time, Sandokan had to retrieve it from the belly of a whale.
After an imaginary romantic walk along the shoreline, Sandokan and Verdeluna discuss the young people of today. They are so very serious, like Verdeluna's daughter Patrizia, and they never have time for themselves...
Meanwhile, the world continues to turn, and we to turn with it. Come to me, Verdeluna, come to me!
Rai summary:
- "Keeping Up" - Sandokan speaks about his laptop and his Internet connection at Mompracem. Verdeluna tells Sandokan about her computer which she bought only because her daughter Patrizia insisted on it. Both speak about the curiosity of the young people and their various ways to communicate: young people yesterday and young people today.

#3 - September 12, 2007
My hand is always ready to caress you, Verdeluna, and to confront the forces of colonialism! But that's not enough for our heroine, who feels caged like an animal, getting varicose veins as she stands in line at the customs post, waiting to escape her humdrum life and make straight for the realm of fantasy!
Her useless ex-husband has started an affair with Vanessa, the classmate of their daughter Patrizia. Confront him without fear, says Sandokan, just like I stared down the tiger. You suffer from a clear case of Kammamuri's Syndrome... but if you must cry, you might as well do it on the beach. And by the way, if you haven't yet found Mr Right, you must have the courage to be patient.
Rai Summary:
- "Hand in Hand" - Anna has seen Renato and his 'little' fiancee walking hand in hand. Sandokan tells her the story of Kammamuri who, after a long inner spiritual travel decided to leave his own master to become a free man. Sandokan suggests to Verdeluna to follow Kammamuri's example and to get rid of the ghost of her ex-husband.

#2 - September 11, 2007
Rudely interrupted from varnishing his galleon, our ever-charming Sandokan flatters Verdeluna with the quality of her voice. Hardly the sort of thing her useless ex-husband would ever have told her! The ear is one of the most erogenous zones of the human body, intones Sandokan – or he would, if he were able to pronounce the word...
Sail-by-night Sandokan likes to listen to the sound of his heartbeat by the light of the stars. These are also quite useful to see where you're going off the shores of Mompracem, especially when the tide is out as, inexplicably, it seems to be today.
Verdeluna tells Sandokan about her virtual encounter with Solstizio, a young man recovering from a heart transplant and passing the time of night chatting away on his computer. We're all sick at heart, says Sandokan, and every day our hearts need trepanning, err.. transplanting.
Then there's the legend in old Mompracem of the elephant and the ant. They decide to lend each other their hearts, but this creates huge problems of a new kind. The tiny ant yearns for an elephant husband, and Jumbo is pining for a spouse he couldn't even see. So after a few days, they get together to reverse the operation, and....? They fall madly in love and live happily ever after. Offspring unknown, chuckles Sandokan.
On to other passions! Verdeluna's son Valerio, assistant chef on a cruise ship, last month made his mother the mother of all mortadella sandwiches... a mortadella that could raise the dead! But like all good things, sausages come to an end.
Don't despair, Verdeluna, there's plenty of mortadella in my nirwana. Come on board of my pirate ship, we'll await the high tide together, and it's off to Finland to see Santa!
Rai Summary:
- "Solstizio" - Now Solstizio is introduced, a boy who chats online after having endured a heart transplant. Anna talks of the dish which her son Vittorio who is an assistant cook on a cruise ship prepared with more care especially for her: a beautiful sandwich with mortadella of a sort which "would revive even the dead".

No. The Tiger is a sad man at heart, ever since the Pearl of Labuan left him. Verdeluna, too, has a tale to tell. Her useless husband has run away with a woman young enough to be his daughter.
