As always, Verdeluna is on the lookout for her favourite animal of the
night, and as usual her chat partner is late...
BLING!! Just what kind of nocturnal animal would you be looking for, Verdeluna?
You're the only kind that I want to have a little fight with, Sandokan. In fact
I just went to the gym for a little kickboxing session, and they were closed...
So you're in a fighting mood today! Want to use me as your sparring partner!
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!! Stand by for the great fight. To your left, Verdeluna.
To your right, the Tiger of Malaysia, Sandokan! All'assalto!!!
Zap! Pow!
Oh Verdeluna, Verdeluna... Not only have you hit me, you knocked me flat against
the ropes, the first time I ever met you... I'll never fight against a woman!
Is that another of your Mompracem sayings?
No it's Yanez. He once suggested that Rosy Bindi (Italy's Family minister) should
wear her hair longer. It earned him such a hiding that it took him a week to
recover...
Sandokan goes on to reminisce how Yanez consulted the Oracle of Mompracem, whose
only response was to climb into the highest tree and fast for days on end. In
fact, the Oracle has only one weakness: Yanez' exquisite coffee, just one cup
at noon exactly. If the coffee is late, the Oracle loses all sense of time. It
once took months to get the Oracle back on track after the noontime cup of coffee
was delivered only a few minutes late... At the football world championships,
the Oracle turned on the TV when the finals were already over!
And that reminds Verdeluna of the summer holidays with her Aunty Assunta, when
she carried the eggs of the old woman's chickens to market every morning, passing
an ancient shop with cuckoo clocks. That's great, says Sandokan! We'll get Yanez
to open a cuckoo clock shop, or else put a cuckoo clock in his kiosk. Then every
15 minutes, out comes not a little bird, but an exquisite cup of coffee!
Walter, the priest, has to climb up the belfry of his church and adjust the clock
at least once a month because it is always late. And last time, he went up with
Renato, the missionary, to attach a huge peace banner to the tower.
It's great that your brother and Father Renato soar above mankind to fight racism,
and everything else that stand in the way of man's bliss, Verdeluna.
Couldn't we get Yanez' Aunty Faustina to bottle a little air from Paradise? Maybe,
and in the meantime I have a bottle from 1971, when the greatest rock artists
met in Bangladesh to talk about peace and the brotherhood of man: Bob Dylan,
Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr...
And as Sandokan opens his little flask, Here Comes the Sun...!
Rai summary:
- "The cuckoo" - Verdeluna recalls a little shop which sold cuckoo
clocks, then she speaks of her clergyman brother's conference against organized
racism.
- "Il cucù" - Verdeluna ricorda una piccola bottega che
vendeva orologi a cucù, poi racconta della conferenza contro il razzismo
organizzata dal fratello sacerdote.

Sandokan recites a prayer to cure his sore throat, which he caught
when escorting two narwhals to colder waters, after they came too close to tropical
Mompracem. How he would have liked to stay with the whale-like creatures with
their magnificent long tusks!
Verdeluna instead ran a hot bath, which she shared with her daughter's toy duck.
How she would have liked the tender attentions of an honourable pirate!
And after a rousing, and therapeutic, cry of "all'assalto", Sandokan
is joined by two other TV stars of yesteryear, Lassie the collie and Rin Tin
Tin. And were they joined by Rex, the canine constable? No, he's currently solving
a case in Germany...
Verdeluna has found an old musical box in the attic. It's red, shaped like a
heart, and has a small ballerina figure spinning round on top of a mirror as
the box plays its tune. Valerio and Patrizia gazed at the box when they were
children, transfixed by the tireless little dancer. Before Verdeluna, it belonged
to her mother and even her grandmother.
It's an exquisite music box, Verdeluna!
Just the other day, a large Navy ship got into trouble off the coast of Mompracem.
Yanez caught the SOS on his radio, and when the pirates brought the ship ashore,
all the girls of Mompracem were delighted at the invasion of handsome young men
in uniform! The captain had graver business, however. He was on his way with
a shipload of aid for Darfur, and wanted to resume his journey as soon as the
vessel was repaired.
Thank goodness this warship wasn't actually heading for a war!
The tiger's colours
are on the outside, but the evils that lurk in man are invisible and much more
dangerous, as the old Mompracem proverb goes.
Rai summary:
- "Carillon" - Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are at Mompracem; Verdeluna
finds
in a storage room an old musical box which is still in good working order.

Verdeluna trova un vecchio carillon ancora funzionante.

Welcome Verdeluna, the tiger has been waiting for you on this enchanted
night, with the stars lighting up the sky and the perfume of a thousand flowers
filling the air. There's been a canoe race on Mompracem, with two world champions
as judges and commentators, along with Yanez, who fired the starting gun.
The sea foamed with the impact of the paddles, as if stirred by a thousand tunafish.
And the spectators on shore climbed into the palm trees to get a better view.
So who won?
For the first time in the history of the race, all contestants arrived at exactly
the same time! After staring at the photofinish for hours, the judges decided
to give first prize to the youngest racer, a boy who took part for the very first
time. The winner got four boxes of eel, a Mompracem specialty famous for giving
strength.
Ahhh Verdeluna could use some eel when she confronts Olivia's jackhammer fist
in the kickboxing arena. Why don't you join the race Verdeluna? You could spend
a long time preparing for it on Mompracem! I'd paste your name all over the Mompracem
airport building when you arrive!
Dimmi quando arreverai, dimmi quando quando quando.... (Tell me when will you
arrive, tell me tell me tell me)
Verdeluna has been enlisted by her brother Walter to help welcome a missionary
from Africa, who will be hosting a conference on tolerance at Walter's parish.
The only problem was that Walter had never met his colleague and was worried
he would miss him. So Verdeluna grabbed a cardboard box and scribbled the priest's
name on the bottom - which unfortunately was Renato... So Verdeluna was terrified
that her ex-husband, The Twit, might actually turn up at the terminal...
Instead, the priest appeared, wearing jeans and a t-shirt instead of a dog collar.
According to Renato, racism is often a form of superstition, like being afraid
of the number 13...
So would you really write my name all over the airport building?
Of course I would Verdeluna!
Rai summary:
- "The regatta of the eels" - Sandokan talks about the regatta of the
eels at Mompracem with the brothers Abbagnale as judges of the contest. Verdeluna
accompanies Walter to the airport to welcome a fellow clergyman for a conference.
- "La Regata delle anguille" - Sandokan racconta la regata delle anguille
a Mompracem con i fratelli Abbagnale come giudici di gara. Verdeluna accompagna
Walter all?aeroporto a prendere un collega sacerdote per un seminario.

War and Peace at Christmas time...
Christian is in crisis, wondering
about the sense of his mission in Iraq. He spends many hours over Christmas remembering
those he has seen killed and praying for their families. Sandokan says armies
are justified as the ultimate form of self-defence but that Gandhi's path of
non-violence is always the better way to solve conflicts. Violence always creates
only losers.
Vittorio, the recovering alcoholic, says he wants to be a better person and learn
from his past mistakes. He feels guilty for all the ills of the world, and his
determination to change his life puts all those around him to shame, says Verdeluna.
It never rains but it pours, she says.
Either nothing happens at all in your life, or you're at the centre of the universe.
Sounds like you could use an exquisite coffee from Yanez!
I've been reading some of the stories about your Saviour, says Sandokan, who
is much impressed with their message of peace and reconciliation. He recalls
the Holy Family's flight to Egypt and the infant Jesus ordering a date palm to
bend down and provide food for the family. The stories from all religions
are
marvellous. They speak of the beauty of creation, like a comet sailing across
the heavens.
Have a great Christmas, Sandokan.
Sleep well, Verdeluna, sleep in peace.
Rai summary:
- "Christmas" - Verdeluna talks about her Christmas with her brothers
in a restaurant. Sandokan narrates an old apocryphal story of Jesus.

Verdeluna is late, and Sandokan nearly
shut down his computer for the night, with only the stars of Mompracem for company.
Verdeluna's house, too, is full of stars - cardboard ones for Christmas!
It's been an eventful Christmas eve, with Sir Hugo taking his leave of Verdeluna
and Martina to leave for Amsterdam, where he will get married. Then Verdeluna
got home to find the door unlocked and an absolutely drop-dead gorgeous young
man waiting inside the flat... Tanned, black-eyed, he seemed a gift from the
gods above... But then the bathroom door swung open, and there was Verdeluna's
son Valerio, straight from the shower!
After the emotional reunion between mother and son, Valerio turned round to present
Pedro Miguel... "Mama, isn't he wonderful?" Valerio cried and kissed
his boyfriend on the cheek.
And if that wasn't enough, enter Christian, Verdeluna's brother, straight from
Iraq and home on Christmas leave!
- "Uncle!" cried Valerio.
- "Christian!" cried Verdeluna.
- "Who's this?" cried Christian, pointing at Pedro Miguel.
Christian, the soldier, hadn't yet been told about Valerio's boyfriend. But he
shook Pedro's hand, and admired the nativity scene that's been in the family
ever since Verdeluna and her brothers were children. "The only thing that
matters now is peace in the world," Christian said.
Vittorio, the other brother, and Patrizia with her DJ also turned up for dinner,
and Valerio cooked the most memorable of Christmas meals. Patrizia and the DJ
sang their own Christmas song.
Verdeluna was charmed to bits by Pedro, the astrophysicist. And at midnight,
the doorbell rang. Walter, the missing brother? Nope, he was celebrating midnight
mass. It was The Twit, who even at Christmas couldn't give them all the gift
of staying away. There he was, silent at first, but launching into a rant against
gay men, foreigners, anyone and anything different, of whom there are far too
many, he said...
The mood got decidedly unchristmaslike, especially when Renato had a go at Vittorio,
who had the audacity of defending gays and foreigners. Renato wasn't taking any
nonsense from a failure and an alcoholic!
This continued until Vittorio grabbed the first thing he could find and hurled
it at The Twit. Unfortunately, it was the delicate statuettes of the old nativity
scene...
Christian and Pedro Miguel jumped between the two men and calmed down the situation.
Finally they were able to settle down and wish each other Merry Christmas, even
Renato and his gay son...
And on Mompracem, there was a great festival of light, and everyone lit up a
candle on the beach to celebrate the family of mankind, all living together on
our little planet amid the giant universe...
Happy Christmas, Verdeluna.
Happy Christmas, Sandokan.

Verdeluna has been taking part in "Dumbo," a Christmas
panto for the children at the home where she is volunteering. She was only in
it for the first few minutes, dressed up in a stork costume made by her friend
Olivia. But seconds after walking into the stage, she tripped over the bird's
huge beak and fell flat on her face. And the poor child playing Dumbo flew through
the air and was caught in the arms of someone in the audience!
It was a complete disaster, with even Dumbo losing both his ears at one point.
But everyone had tears of laughter in their eyes, and the actors got a standing
ovation.
Roberto, whose mother is in prison, was in Patrizia's arms all the time. And
he blew on his harmonica even during the performance...
Verdeluna is wondering what will come of all these disadvantaged children, who
are so dear to her heart. That makes it all the more important to concentrate
on the present, says Sandokan, quoting another of Yanez' wisdoms.
And what does the pirate see in the present? A tapestry of stars, burning with
passion, and stretching from the ocean to the skies above... The path to you
is long, so long, Verdeluna, but slowly I am beginning to walk it.
Sandokan recalls how he and Yanez, travelling back from a boat race on Sardinia,
were caught out by a storm off the coast of Calabria. Yanez was blown overboard
and disappeared into the waves, and there was nothing Sandokan could do to save
him. Three days later, he found his friend with a group of locals, busily negotiating
a price for a large quantity of aubergines and peppers in oil. Yanez always had
a good nose for a deal...
Verdeluna is terrible at bargaining. Only the other day she was robbed of a small
fortune, paying for a kilo of courgettes. Which reminds Sandokan of the beautiful
markets of Marrakesh and Saigon, of Rio and Denpasar...
But he likes fish markets best. They are the roughest and most real of all markets.
All the shouting of the fishermen makes Sandokan want to cry "all'assalto!" -
but in reality, he just lets Yanez do the bargaining, and together they have
a fish barbecue on the beach...
Come with me Verdeluna, and after Yanez' barbecue I'll cook you a huge nasi goreng...

For the first time ever, the two chatters log on at the same
time! The conversation turns to camping holidays. Sandokan isn't a happy camper,
and is far more in his element aboard his galleon.
Verdeluna remembers a camping trip in the mountains with Renato, Valerio and
Patrizia. The Twit rather fancied himself a kind of Indiana Jones. He bought
enough equipment for a trip to the most dangerous parts of the High Andes, even
though the most challenging was to go in search of blackberries along a mountain
path. Renato is all wind and no substance: as soon as he'd met some other twit
at the campsite, he spent the rest of the holiday playing cards and smoking cigars
in his friend's comfortably heated caravan!
The Twit even wanted to put up an Indiana Jones poster above the conjugal bed,
but Verdeluna put a stop to that. Now, she just has photographs of her two children.
How wonderful it was to give birth, to see these tiny creatures come out of her
own body and realise they were her own!
To Sandokan, the mention of childbirth is more painful. Is he speaking about
The Pearl of Labuan? No.
About some other woman? Yes.
ARRRRGGGHHHH!!! shouts
Verdeluna.
WHO???
A soothsayer, a reader of coffee dregs, Donna Sofia, a Neapolitan clairvoyante,
came to Mompracem soon after La Perla had left Sandokan. The pirate wasn't quite
himself in those days. So he took the woman to Yanez' kiosk and ordered an exquisite
coffee. He downed it in one go, and gave her the empty cup. She turned it round,
and upside down, and round again, all the time looking at it intensely. Then
the woman burst out laughing as if she were crazy. "You may not believe
me," she said, "but one day you will know your son!"
Sandokan lived in hope for many years that one day he would have a son. But what,
says Verdeluna, if you already had a son without even knowing it, and the woman
predicted you would one day meet him? Sandokan has never looked at the story
that way. But he is persuaded to accept it, since as a secret dad, he is so so
much more sexy!
Verdeluna, you are the water of my sea, the sand of my beach, the green moon
of my sky... And you are my Sandokan, you are my night, my sunset, my daybreak,
you are my most beautiful dream. And can dreams become reality? Yes, just like
reality can become a dream.
And you Verdeluna, have you ever had your future read to you? No, but she does
like to read a horoscope. What sign are you, Sandokan? A Pirate. Well, I'm a
Twin, and it says here Pirates and Twins have a very bright future together...

- What hour is this? What town? What country? I have fallen
straight from the moon. A hundred years, or one minute, how long I fell I know
not.
- Sandokan, what are you talking about?
- I thought I was a ball, the colour of saffron.
- That's fine, but can we talk about us now?
- Where have I arrived? Tell me the truth. Where have I arrived, falling like
a meteorite?
- You've hit your head. You sound confused.
- Have patience. Falling from the moon, I could not decide where I would land.
And now I know not where I am. Where has my weight carried me? To another moon?
Or to earth?
[note: see also the first chapters of A Voyage to the Moon, by Cyrano de Bergerac,
written about 1649]
- You're with Verdeluna! Sandokan! VER-DE-LU-NA!!!
- Verdeluna, of course! Verdeluna!
Sandokan has been practising his lines for Cyrano de Bergerac, this year's Play
by Moonlight on Mompracem. Cyrano, a French poet suffering because of his huge
and ungainly nose, is mocked wherever he goes. But the story of his love for
Roxane is truly touching... He feels too inadequate to court the lovely woman
himself, but helps another suitor, Christian, to conquer her with delicate poetry.
Sandokan is Cyrano, and Yanez is the director. His cousin Paolinha Yanez de Gomiera
do Nascimento looks after the hair, costumes and props.
So is Sandokan's nose really that big? No comment from the actor, but plenty
more from Cyrano. His nose is a mountain peak, a continent, a peninsula, so big
it could even be used as a weapon! All'assalto!!
No actually, Sandokan doesn't have a big nose, but he has such big ears that
as a child, they called him Dumbo, the elephant.
And that reminds Verdeluna of her performance as the stork in Dumbo, the Christmas
play for which she is rehearsing with the children of the `family house' - including
Roberto, the little harmonica player whose mother is serving time in prison.
She has decided to join as a volunteer, and although it's much harder than she
even imagined, she is incredibly keen to do well. Even the cleaning jobs are
going better than in her own apartment!
Verdeluna is thinking hard about taking little Roberto into care. She won't rush
into any decisions, and has talked it over with Patrizia - who says she's nuts
but a wonderful mother. She then ran to the gym where she took it all out on
the punching bag, before embracing it and sobbing "oh punching bag, I am
so happy, so happy."
And on that romantic note, the two chatters together recite the great love scene
between Roxane and Christian.
Too bad it's all in the mind...
Rai summary:
- "The performance" - Sandokan performs Cyrano; Verdeluna works as
a volunteer with the children of women prisoners and would like to take one of
them, Roberto, into care.

Sandokan has been watching an old movie on TV, "A Pirate
in Love," a true cult show on Mompracem. Verdeluna would have liked nothing
better than to watch it with him, sitting on the sofa and massaging his head
with her fingers...
Have you ever gazed at the clouds, Sandokan, and looked at all the shapes they
form?
The other day, Verdeluna clearly recognised the face of her brother Walter.
For a priest, it's natural to be in charge of certain heavenly phenomena. But
Sandokan often sees Aunty Faustina floating by across the skies.
Explain that!
Recently, a small cloud drifted over Mompracem and Sandokan thought he saw the
shape of a greyhound. Or was it an angel, a cherub like you have in Christian
art? Yanez had the answer: it was Guignefort of Burgundy, the canine saint. According
to an old legend, Guignefort was entrusted with protecting a young child while
its father, a knight, went out hunting. Upon his return, the knight found only
the greyhound, with a bloodstained muzzle, and no sign of his son. Assuming the
dog had slain the child, the father, blinded by grief, killed the animal with
his sword. Only then did he see his son, alive and well, playing next to the
dead body of a dangerous viper that had crawled into the castle.
In tears, the father buried his greyhound with all the honour and attention that
he would have accorded to a man. And the grave became a site of pilgrimage for
all those who believed Saint Guignefort would protect their children too...
What a story, believe it or not! But on the issue of authenticity, that was always
a bit of an obsession for Sandokan's friend Truffaut. You mean François
Truffaut, the film director? Of course. BUT I ADORE YOU SANDOKAN, I ADORE YOU!!!
Verdeluna has been a Truffaut fan ever since finding out that as a little boy,
the artist called a man "daddy" who wasn't in fact his father.
During a recent visit to Mompracem, young Francois in fact did discover the identity
of his real father, says Sandokan. But out of love for his adoptive father, he
made no great fuss about it. So that explains Truffaut's obsession with authenticity!
And on that subject, Verdeluna has a story to share.
Martina, her colleague in the shop, has told her about a friend who spent a lot
of time on internet chatrooms. Her boyfriend, worried that she was cheating on
him, decided to log on under a false name and start their courtship all over
again online. And when he finally revealed his true identity, hoping she would
see it as a big joke, they had a ferocious argument.
So what if Sandokan isn't who he says he is? Verdeluna would be too embarrassed
for words!
Sandokan, I don't want to fall in love with words in the wind!
Nor do I, Verdeluna...
Look at the skies, beyond the clouds, and in the clear moonlight you will see
my galleon. The cannon will roar at your every command, and there won't be a
battle where we won't shout together:
- "All'assalto!!!".
