He feels like his bandit flag, unfurled before a new battle.
All'assalto!!
Verdeluna is full of excitement ahead of her move into the house of her dreams,
the Dutch Windmill, on Saturday. She ought to write a book about it, she jokes: "The
Fantastical Story of Verdeluna and her Conquest of the Dutch Windmill".
But maybe that's too long for a title. Maybe not, says Sandokan, and together
they try to make it a bit longer, turning the tale of the windmill into the story
of their lives - until the book is down to the last few pages because the story
is already on the cover!
And on Saturday, there'll be the Land Rover, Valerio, Aldo, Vittorio and Olivia
the kickboxer, oh! and... even Tarzan the automobile artist has offered Verdeluna
the use of his van!
Now that is something Sandokan is less excited about...
But when he realises
just how badly Verdeluna wants to move in quickly, he gives his grudging consent.
Verdeluna, who is brimming with energy, has even found time to record a radio
advertisement for the new restaurant. It'll be the story of two young people
who meet at the new venue, starring... Martina and Alejandro, her exotically-accented
new boyfriend, a Spanish singer she ran into on the train and later met again
in a local bar.
Life imitating art, Sandokan reflects.

Sandokan is late again, having been carried away by Debussy's Clair de Lune,
one of his favourite bits of music. It reminds him of the Mompracem nights, when
the moonlight plays with the waves of the ocean. And he's turned the volume way
up, hoping that all of Mompracem will hear, that the grains of sand will vibrate
with the music's enchanting chords in a nimblefooted dance, that the fish of
the ocean will surge forth from the depths...
And did they?
Yes, there were thousands of small fish that suddenly jumped up
from the water, vibrating in mid-air and shaking off tiny droplets of water...
Even the pallid moon had a salty tear in its eye, and every note from the piano
was a kiss for you...
Ooooh Sandokan, you can always make me dream... And if you can dream together,
you're closer to making something a reality together, too, Verdeluna...
Sandokan is convinced they will soon be together, sooner than you think.
And he can't wait to sink into a deep, soft seat around Verdeluna's fireplace,
put up his still plastered foot, and be caressed by his true love!
Verdeluna's work on the Dutch windmill is nearly ready. She'll be able to look
out over the sea while she cooks or does the dishes, and long for a pirate to
come sailing, and at night, she can look at the starry sky...
That only leaves one thing...
All'assalto!!!
And Sandokan sends his Verdeluna the Clair de Lune, making all the magic of Mompracem
come alive by the simple click of a mouse...

Sandokan has missed his Verdeluna dearly over the weekend.
Just as well that Yanez kept him busy discussing the plan to rebuild his beach
kiosk.
Verdeluna has piled her entire family into her car and driven to Rome to go and
meet Christian's flight from Iraq, where he has been injured by a landmine. Iraq.
They were given a special permit to go straight to the plane at Rome's Ciampino
Airport, and Christian managed to give his sister a handshake and his usual wink
before being stretchered off to a waiting ambulance.
Your brother is a very courageous man, says Sandokan.
But he's also quite timid: his wink means that he loves you, and that he's very
proud to have such a strong sister.
Crying helps, and tears soothe your sorrow, and give solace to your spirit.
At the hospital, Christian was delighted to have all his dear ones around him,
including little Robertino - who cheered up the hospital by squeaking a few notes
on his harmonica...
According to the doctor, Christian will be home in a week.
Sandokan is delighted.
How he wishes he could be there with Verdeluna, to show her how much he loves
her.
But even now, Sandokan, I can feel your arms around me, I can feel your warmth!
Sandokan will always be near you, Verdeluna, and doesn't even need the internet...
I have a little radar in my heart, which beats strongly whenever your heart beats
strongly.
It's a small radar, but very efficient.
It gets no interference, and listens only to your very own signal!
Mompracem is quiet and calm tonight.
It's so quiet I can nearly hear you breathe. Your breath is brought to me by
the warm wind that blows as soon as we are connected. A soft, sweet breath that
caresses my cheeks - stop it Sandokan - that strokes my hair - Sandokan, you're
making me blush! - that brings me your perfume of roses, of violets - Sandokan,
stop it or I'll have to...
To do what? Hmm?
To... to... cover you with kisses from head to toes. Verdeluna, I am your admirer,
and you can do to me whatever you want.
Well then, I order you to come here!
Now!
Straightaway!
Now that's the one order Sandokan is unable to obey, at least not this very instant.
But soon... soon... sooner than you think...

That's the most wonderful thing I wanted to tell you, and I haven't even told
you yet...
My lips are touching your ear, so small and so tender, and holding all the world's

Mmmmmmmmmm.....
And where are you getting all these wonderful words from, Sandokan?
From my plaster cylinder... I asked everyone I meet to write some love poetry
on the cast around my foot!
What a great idea Sandokan, that way you have the best there is to love literally
at your feet. And when the cast comes off?
I'll keep it. With the cast off, some phrases will be even easier to read!
So what would Verdeluna like to write on the cast? She'd draw a heart, with an
arrow through it, and the letters "V S"...
Great Verdeluna, a little childish but very effective!
Sandokan's preferred love poem is by Jacques Prevert: Paris at Night.
Three matches one by one struck in the night

But Verdeluna's mind is in Rome, tomorrow, when Christian will be returning from
Iraq, where he was injured. They'll all go together to meet his plane: Verdeluna,
Patrizia, Walter, Vittorio, and even little Robertino.
And Sandokan tells the story of Andrew, an American veteran of the first Gulf
War who visited Mompracem a few years ago. Andrew, an old friend of Yanez, had
lost both legs, and spoke of his problems finding his place in American society
on his return. Andrew was happy on Mompracem, helping Yanez in the kiosk where
he could, serving coffee... But there was a look on his face as if he missed
something, something worth living for...
Then one day they went looking for mussels, for Yanez famous mussel stew, and
Andrew was transfixed: the sun, the sea, the peace of it all...
It was his guardian angel showing him a new path to travel!
And today, Andrew runs a successful mussel import-export business, and he always
sends Yanez a postcard when he leaves on a business trip...
Verdeluna, we all have our guardian angel, and even in the most difficult moment
we have to put our trust in him!
Verdeluna complains about the bureaucracy that she has to face in Italy to set
up her new restaurant.
Does Sandokan have any idea about Italian bureaucracy?
It is huge, a heavenly hand that feeds millions.
Well there you are then, that's not so bad, is it?
Long live bureaucracy!

ready to conquer his Verdeluna - who of course had already been conquered long
ago.
And Verdeluna is also ready, ready for a kiss to come blowing over the ocean,
ready like Madame Butterfly...
And Sandokan will come, he won't let down his true love, like Pinkerton, who
only cared for himself and left his Butterfly waiting forever...
And Verdeluna has even been to church on Sunday, praying on her knees that please,
please, there's this pirate I know, Lord, and please Lord, please, let him love
me truly and please, please, let him come to me, Lord...
Verdeluna is truly, madly, deeply in love with her pirate Sandokan, and she wants
him, she needs him, forever and ever and... if they don't meet soon, their love
may be lost forever.
I too am of this opinion, Verdeluna.
If it weren't for this broken foot, I'd be there already!
Let me heal, let me be master once again of myself, and you'll see that destiny
will do justice to our passion!
Vittorio brought Verdeluna back to earth on Sunday, meeting her in the church
and saying: "Thank you for praying so hard for me, but if you looked at
my Via Crucis frescos, you'd be a lot happier." And the comments have been
encouraging. One parishioner even said: "Finally a Via Crucis where I feel
like I'm standing next to Jesus!" Walter is delighted too, and has made
his peace with his brother. He even hasn't touched a drop of alcohol and.. has
even asked Vittorio to replace Abdel as his caretaker...!
Verdeluna is dying to know the meaning of the date on Aunt Faustina's vial. And
as luck would have it, today, Yanez got an SMS from Aunt Faustina, telling him
to make the most exquisite coffee he's ever made. She's on her way to Mompracem,
and is arriving on Thursday! And Sandokan has an infallible way of making her
talk...
Like?
Like buying her a complete footballer's outfit from Sporting Lisbon, her favourite
team.
And if that doesn't work, a season ticket to the stadium!

#173 - May 7, 2008 - Sandokan, the usual suspect!
Verdeluna is in need of some romantic comfort from her Pirate. It's been a
long, long day, although it would have been a lot shorter if little Roberto hadn't
woken up the family at nine. Nine! They'd all overslept. Verdeluna was late for
work, Patrizia missed an hour of school and Roberto even missed breakfast in
the rush.
And Verdeluna had barely got to the shop, and fed her foster son half the contents
of the coffee bar next door, when she got another anonymous message on her cellphone: "Your
group is very good, but it's your voice that makes my head spin round. Let's
meet at Sailor's Square at two!"
And Verdeluna, who still half suspects Sandokan of being the anonymous message
sender, went straight to the workshop of her other usual suspect: Tarzan the
automotive artist, creator of dinosaurs from scrap metal, who does like to have
the radio on when he's working.
And is it tuned to Radio Citta Presente?
So Verdeluna was about to confront poor Tarzan when a voice announced: "This
is Radio Rock 200!" Oops...
And did she go to the square at two?
No!
She wasn't going to give the anonymous messager any satisfaction this time.
Well done, says Sandokan.
It's about time you got these messages out of your head!
So tell me, Sandokan, it was you all the time, wasn't it? Go on, confess!
No, no, and no again. It wasn't me, and we don't even get Radio Citta Presente
on Mompracem.
Fine, but you're still one of my main suspects, Pirate. Fine, if it makes you
happy, I'll be your suspect pirate!
And when Verdeluna got back, there was a phone call from Valerio, who uncovered
an entire fireplace at the old Dutch mill where he was doing restauration work!
You must absolutely repair it, Verdeluna!
Fire doesn't only give us warmth, it is also the flame that purifies, it is light,
it drives away evil thoughts!
Just imagine you, me and little Robertino, sitting around the fireplace on a
chilly winter evening, with a woollen blanket on our knees and a book of poetry...
But just as Verdeluna and Valerio were inspecting the fireplace, little Roberto
picked up a tool and managed to cut his right index finger. It was a nasty cut,
and needed a few stiches in hospital.
Ohh Sandokan, that was just a typical Verdeluna day.
Can you forgive me?

Billie Holiday... Some like Ute Lemper... Some like Patty Pravo... And some like
La Callas!
And Verdeluna?
Verdeluna would like to sing like all of these rolled into one. And Sandokan,
tone-deaf Sandokan, would sit at her feet, and be her biggest fan! For you, I
would die; for your eyes, I'd live again, and conquer the sun...
HEY!
How come Sandokan knows the words of an old Patty Pravo song?
Could it be
that the Italian star also came round to Mompracem?
But of course, and she dedicated
her most famous song to Yanez: La Bambola - you make me spin round, you make
me spin round, as if I was just a doll...
The two of them had a passionate love affair until one dark and stormy night,
they had a furious row. And there Patty stood on the beach, suitcase in hand,
crying:
- "No, ragazzo no, no ragazzo
no, del mio amore non ridere.
Non ci gioco più quando
giochi tu sai far male
da piangere."
(No boy, don't laugh at my love. I won't play the way you play. You hurt me,

Ah, that reminds Verdeluna of another tempestuous relationship: Ex-husband Renato's
turbulent but, it would seem, brief liaison with the Spanish-Italian cosmetics
rep, Consuelo Infradito. The Twit and his improbably-monikered belle left for
the Costa Brava, but soon had a tiff of epic proportions, in the course of which
she, the successor to Vanessa Paradiso, separated him from her good self, his
wallet, his money and his passport. And Renato, in a state of high agitation,
rang Verdeluna, begging her for the bank's phone number, so that he could block
his credit cards...
But why is Verdeluna is a singing mood? Remember the birthday party where she
sang a quartet with Valerio, Martina and Patrizia's boyfriend Aldo? Well, they've
now been invited to perform on radio! So tonight they made a live appearance
on Radio Citta Presente, run by Nicola, the husband of Olivio the kickboxer.
The foursome - two singers, a trumpet player and a DJ - have come to realise
they could actually have a musical future and Nicola launched quite a few groups
in his days as a Bari nightclub owner!
