The show was broadcast for the first time last year. INFORMATION - GENERAL INFORMATION • - INFORMATION - PEOPLE • Kabir Bedi is heading for the island with all his usual confidence, and is looking forward to playing the amateur analyst: "I will do my best. What I like best is the group dynamics, the alliances and the plots." • Paolo Callisano was born in Genoa in 1967. He has made many acting appearances in film, the stage and on TV, including a hugely popular Italian soap. He is looking forward to a life-changing experience: "I want to show myself as I have never done before - that is my true self, not my acting persona. I’ve always been too shy to do that." • DJ Francesco – Francesco Faccinetti – was born in Milan in 1980. He started his career with a satellite broadcaster but made his breakthrough as a singer in 2003. DJ Francesco would love to be on camera at all times: "I adore the idea of being filmed around the clock. But I am worried that the others can’t stand me." • Rome-born Valerio Merola (1955) is a member of the Italian journalists’ union. To him, the island sojourn will be a kind of homecoming, as he lived in Cuba, next door to the Dominican Republic, for three years. Muscular Merola has but one concern: "Mosquitoes are the only thing I am afraid of. As always, they love to have me for breakfast." • Spaniard Sergio Muniz (1975) is a native of Bilbao and has been a model since he was 19. He’d like to spend his days as a castaway playing Neptune, but isn’t scared either to show his caring side: "I would have liked to bring my harpoon gun. But there’s no way I’ll bring any pictures of loved ones – that’s as if I wanted to hurt myself." • Totò Schillaci is from Palermo, Sicily, where he was born in 1964. The former Juventus and Inter midfielder was the biggest scorer in the 1990 football world cup, when his six goals made him a national hero in Italy. His biggest worry? "I’m afraid of nothing and nobody on the island. The only thing I fear is the flight to get there." • Roman Rosanna Cancellieri was born in 1952 and has been a TV journalist since 1982, including for one of Italy’s main news shows. Always a practical woman, she will be taking her rucksack and swimming goggles, as she wears contact lenses. • Antonella Elia (1963) is a native of Turin and made her debut as an actress in 1989. She sees Valerio Merola as her most daunting competitor "because of what they say about him… But I am still going to win!" • Alessia Merz was born in the Italian town of Trento in 1974, and first appeared on TV on 1993. She says she is hoping the audience will catch a glimpse of het true self: "I’m not just another babe. I have character, and I want to show it." • Multitalented Patrizia Pellegrino was born in 1962 near Naples, and made her stage debut in 1981. She’s a true adventurer: "Until now I’ve only had very comfortable holidays. This will be the biggest adventure in my life!" • Ana Laura Ribas, born 1968 in Brazil, started her stage career in 1989 but made her breakthrough in 1992. She has no illusions about what it means to be famous: "I am going to the island to be seen. After all that is what reality shows are for these days." • Aida Yespica was born in Venezuela in 1982 and has been living in Italy since 1999. She started out as a model but has since done TV commercial work. Aida says she “would like to bring a stick to keep agressors at bay." INFORMATION - PRODUCTION DIARY »July 14, 2004 - Castaway Kabir to join Italian celebs on two month survival trip. Kabir will be going to the limits of his endurance this autumn when he joins a group of Italian celebrities for a two-month survival trip to a fenced-off part of the Dominican Republic jungle, to be filmed for the Isola dei Famosi show of Italian TV channel RAI DUE. The first broadcast ist scheduled to be on September 17, 2004. With not even a box of matches to his name, our creature comfort-loving castaway will have an interesting time learning to stew lizards and live off wild berries, he says. He will be allowed two changes of clothes, two pairs of swimming trunks, trainers, sandals and a length of rope, plus - he hopes - an Italian dictionary. Actually, we suspect Kabir will only use it to swat flies - or his fellow celebs - as his Italian is pretty fluent. "It's pretty rugged survival, plus there's all these tests they set you," Kabir said. "You have to fashion your own fishing hooks." Kabir's real Mompracem does have a luscious tropical beach, but it's a brief swim across a shark-infested bay. As well as lots of native wildlife, Kabir will enjoy the company of nine other participants, including singer Dj Francesco, show girl Antonella Elia, and Rosanna Cancellieri, a TV journalist. Broadcast in real time, the show is vaguely based on the famous - some would say notorious - Big Brother format. Cameras have been hidden all over the tropical paradise, and at the end of each weekly show, Italian viewers get to vote out one of the contestants. One other poor soul will be evicted by their fellow island inmates. The remaining short-term savages are set tests by the show's producers that will earn them immunity from eviction, or simple pleasures such as food or the right to have a good wash. The ultimate winner takes home 200,000 euro, of which they will be required to give half to a charity of their choice. "I'll really have to get into shape," Kabir says, adding he may use his stay on a tobacco-free paradise to give up smoking altogether. So does he look forward to the experience? "Of course! I love a challenge. But maybe I'll be voted out in a week!" »July 23, 2004 - Harvesting coconuts - no problem for Kabir Kabir's excellent and excited teachers: daughter Pooja and son Adam! Both siblings are now teaching Kabir in India some very useful and essential skills any sophisticated gentleman should know. Pooja is teaching her father how to harvest coconuts (that surely must be a sight!) while Adam, an expert in many outdoor pursuits, introduces his father to the fine art of fishing. Father Kabir is proud to have such skilled teachers and is grateful for every survival training tip they can give him. In a few weeks' time, in September 2004, Kabir Bedi will start a two-month stay in the jungle of the Dominican Republic where he will participate in the popular Italian live TV show L'Isola dei famosi of the RAI DUE channel. Newly acquired skills like starting a fire the Neandertal way, fashioning your own fishing hooks, building a roof above your head from nothing, finding edible jungle weeds should come in handy. Diego Armando Maradona declined the invitation for health reasons. »August 8, 2004 - Kabir will be dropped from a helicopter! Kabir reveals in an interview with Mumbai-based newspaper Mid-Day, that he and the other participants will be dropped from a helicopter into the sea and all will have to swim ashore - in the opening sequence of the live TV show. He also says: "I was asked to participate by the organisers as I am well known in Europe, Italy and Spain. I thought I would take up the challenge since I’ve been getting quite lazy and complacent lately." On the topic of survival, Mid-Day.com asked Kabir- he is married for the third time and he is also known for his relationships with the Indian film stars Parveen Babi and Persis Khambatta - for five tips on how to survive a bad relationship. The celebs spent what they thought would be their last night of comfort in a hotel, but found themselves in the middle of Hurricane Jeanne, with winds of around 130 km/h. The storm has now moved away and is now a category 4 hurricane (on a scale of 1 to 5). RAI showed shots of hotel staff taking cover behind the reception desk as plates and cutlery flew through the air. Kabir said his encounter with Hurricane Jeanne was exciting on the one hand and frightening on the other: "This is a really great adventure that began with a challenge from nature. We have survived this challenge (his Italian is corrected by Ana Laura Ribas) with lots of courage. We are together, we are happy, but there’s one thing I want to say. When we see a force like this, a force of nature, it is a magnificent and intense thing. But on the other hand it… destroys nearly everything. On the street to... where we are and... nearly every 50 metres there were trees that had fallen, rocks in the street, telephone wires, power lines, it’s really a destruction that I have never seen in my life. And I have seen quite a bit!" But clearly, that didn't stop Sandokan's legendary liking for creature comforts: "At the most difficult moment of the evening, Kabir walked up to this lady and asked her at what time they were serving dinner!" said Patrizia Pellegrino. Shortly after 10 pm, local presenter Massimo Caputi announced that the port authorities had prohibited the stars from embarking - never mind making helicopter jumps! »September 17, 2004 - Kabir's helicopter jump has been postponed until Friday ...assuming the sixth major tropical storm this season doesn't head for Kabir's Mompracem. Hurricane Karl is brewing over the mid-Atlantic with winds of up to 105 miles per hour. Before leaving for his desert island, Kabir told us that he wasn't too worried about the weather since "four hurricanes in the same season would be extremely rare"... Thanks to Hurricane Jeanne, tonight's show was cut short by about half at the last moment. The celebs' departure, including their jump from a helicopter live on TV, was cancelled and will now be broadcast during Friday's prime-time long version of the show. (just image - Kabir jumps into the ocean and no one's even looking). »September 18, 2004 - Kabir's Isola show was the best watched programme on Italian TV last night, with 5.2 million viewers seeing the first episode, beating the record of last year's opening night with nearly 4.4 million viewers. »September 20, 2004 - Weather report: It could well be that the show's producers have been jumping the gun with their plans for a Friday start, given the weather in the Caribbean. Hurricane Jeanne has now killed several people in the Dominican Republic, where Kabir is now, and more than 90 in neighbouring Haiti. The destruction is particularly bad in the northwestern part of the island, with widespread flooding and storm damage. Kabir is the southeastern part. Haiti is especially prone to flooding because of the massive deforestation that has been going on! On Sunday, Jeanne hit speeds of up to 150 mph. Karl is now a Category 4 hurricane, on a scale of 1 to 5, but so far it has been floating over the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 1300 miles from the islands, and it is expected to stay there. News reports from Haiti now speak of more than 600 dead, mostly as a result of flooding and mudslides caused by Hurricane Jeanne. The northwestern part of the island is the worst hit. Kabir is in the southeastern part of the island, diagonally across in the Dominican Republic, where the death toll now stands at 11. Apart from Hurricane Karl, which is still raging far out over the Atlantic, another storm is brewing. Lisa, number eight on the list, now has wind speeds of around 60 mph, but is expected to become a hurricane. It is already heading west towards the Caribbean. Computers and telecoms technology where Kabir is staying are still working, albeit with interruptions. Still, the very size of the catastrophy and the new hurricanes on their way are making L'Isola dei Famosi looking increasingly uncertain. »September 23, 2004 - Around 2 pm, RAI again confirms the show is to kick off live tomorrow! Meanwhile, more than 1,000 people are reported dead on the island and the authorities fear the death toll will rise to over 2,000. In the Dominican Republic, where Kabir is staying, 11 people were killed so far. In neighbouring Haiti, to the west, more than 175,000 people have in some way been affected by the destruction brought by Hurricane Jeanne. Kabir and the others are doing well, as reported to us by several personal contacts. RAI's Isola home page has put a video gallery online with several shots of Kabir. »September 24, 2004 - Kabir jumps from a helicopter into the sea and swims ashore. »September 25, 2004 - Sandokan, Master of the Machete, treats his co-castaways to an ultra-fresh coconut. Daughter Pooja's jungle training is paying off. Antonella Elia is attacked by Ana Laura Ribas and others for having “thrown away two votes” by nominating Kabir and Patrizia for eviction. She says she voted for just anybody because she did not want to take part in the elimination of any of the competitors. When Valerio Merola was thrown out (or so she thinks – the players have not been told of the existence of the ‘final beach’) – she hated it, Antonella says. So is this how she intends to go on, by throwing away her votes because she disagrees with the rules of the game, the others ask… »September 27, 2004 - Kabir evacuated from island! Kabir, six others evacuated from tropical paradise after eating poisonous nuts. Kabir, who only a couple of days ago warned his fellow castaways against eating toxic fruits, is one of seven people who had to be evacuated from the island after feasting on poisonous nuts… All the patients are now back at their hotel, where they have been put on a drip, and are reported to be feeling better by the hour! Egged on by their hunger and enouraged by Ana Laura Ribas ("They look like Brazilian cocinos!"), the crew stripped an entire bush of its nuts and decided they looked like almonds. According to Sergio Muniz, the nuts were an aphrodisiac, prompting Kabir, always concerned for the romantic well-being of others, to take some to DJ Francesco to help the singer's budding relationship with young model Aida Yespica. "I can see a wonderful night coming," Kabir said. "They're disgusting but they're good," replied Francesco. Alas, not so. Within minutes, Sergio, Alessia and Kabir are complaining of nausea, although our Sandokan as always puts a brave face on it: "I feel problems with my stomach, but I have faith because I have a stomach of iron." This by the way comes from a man who constantly travels the world without ever being felled by Delhi Belly, Montezuma's Revenge or even the after-effects of a serving of London fish and chips! Set doctor Diego Filippini tries to deal with the outbreak of 'nut sickness' on the spot but is concerned about the vomiting and decides to get the seven celebs off the island because they are suffering from dehydration. Kabir, as well as Sergio Muniz, Patrizia Pellegrino, Rosanna Cancellieri, Toto Schillaci and Ana Laura Ribas are whisked away on a motor boat! This by the way was not the doctor's first intervention - earlier he had to give an injection to Paolo Calissano who was suffering from a sore knee... »September 29, 2004 - 12:31 CET Kabir is feeling better! This information is based on the situation of yesterday. »October 6, 2004 - The participants are frequently argueing, here are some quotes from today's broadcast: Ana Laura: "You're so stupid!" Aida: "And you're old and only jealous!" Ana Laura: "You're beautiful but that's the only thing you have!" Ana Laura: "You can keep your DJ. I don't like little boys!" Ana Laura (to interviewer) "Today we had a stupid row, it was low, it was small-minded... Aida is useless on the island. She gets up early to have more time to do nothing!" DJ Francesco: "An hour earlier everything is fine. An hour later it's a disaster!", "They started a fight because Aida is with me." DJ Francesco to Ana Laura: "If everything you don't like makes you so angry you will ruin my but also your adventure. Try to smooth over the problems you have with others." Ana Laura: "But now there's no way back. You have nominated Alessia and now you will nominate me." DJ Francesco: "The motivation why I'm here is stronger than anything. Instead of taking this gift that you have received, what do you do? You throw it away!" Ana Laura: "Well, then I promise that from now on I will count to three before I get angry." Aida: "I don't know if I want to fight with such an unpleasant person. If she carries on like that all the time I will go away. I feel I have lost." Antonella: "You haven't lost at all! Aida, it's the bad people who lose. The good ones will win! You did nothing wrong, you only defended yourself." DJ Francesco (to Aida): "I defended you for an hour. If you don't believe me you don't trust me. You've never trusted me. If I like you and want to stay with you, I will do anything to stay with you." DJ Francesco: "Aida is mad with me because I didn't tell her the things that Ana Laura told me a month ago!" »October 7, 2004 - Kabir - the palm reader! Patrizia and Antonella go looking for prawns, Antonella complains about her row with Rosanna last night. They find a few oysters and Kabir and Rosanna cut coconuts for everyone. Patrizia argues with Totò. She tells him to go fishing but he says he won't do so at night. Patrizia then asks him to teach her how to do it so she can go out and fish with Antonella. Totò: “Women are all the same, they're always in a hurry. Calm down, calm down - it's only six in the morning.” (in fact it is eight o'clock). The others are still asleep. Rosanna, Francesco and Totò have their palms read by Kabir. Antonella confesses to Patrizia that now and then she feels "like an anaconda about to pounce on a mouse". After a while Francesco acts the clown (again). It begins to rain and all take shelter under the tent, except Antonella who remains seated, alone, in the rain. They play a game to pass the time. Antonella decides to climb a palm tree and pick coconuts. She manages to pick two but hurts her hands and feet, further cutting her hand while opening a nut. Patrizia and Rosanna look after her injuries. Later, Antonella walks into the water and comes back with a fish that she has caught alone, barehanded. All are amazed and applaud her but she seems a little shocked. At midday, all except expulsion nominees Rosanna and Alessia go away for the weekly leadership test. DJ Francesco wins the test. »October 8, 2004 - Kabir dyes his beard Kabir hurts himself and is looked after by DJ..... Kabir dyes his beard and Ana Laura uses some of the dye for her hair. [October 7, 2004] She uses the absence of the others (who are in search of food etc) to find out where he stands, and who he will vote for tomorrow night [tonight, October 8]. Kabir answers that if she has a problem with Aida, she has one with the leader too.... Ana Laura criticises DJ, saying he is dishonest. Together with Alessia, she laughs about Kabir. The two women tease him and say he is useless, “a sixty-year-old man who allows himself to be ordered around by others." ... Big row about food, there is too little to go round and everybody is complaining. Ana Laura once more attacks Aida, and then Kabir, because she has not been able to convince him to nominate Aida. She says sarcastically that "now she understands his position"... Alessia breaks down crying, says she can't take it any longer, she wants to go, she hates her companions and loathes the food... DJ Francesco says he can't even sit down without someone shouting insults... Ana Laura says everyone does as they are told by DJ Francesco, and claims Kabir has admitted as much. She says DJ Francesco is manipulating the nominations to save his girlfriend Aida. ...Toto says Kabir does not do a great deal but "he is a man and he could always be useful." Aida says that when she fights with Ana Laura, she feels like she is fighting with her mother, because of the age difference. Kabir justifies his dying his beard by saying he is "human, not a saint." He hopes that Rosanna will be thrown out tomorrow [tonight, October 8], even though Alessia keeps changing her mind about staying on the island. »October 12, 2004 - Kabir describes L'Isola as "the hell, with little pieces of paradise in it" »October 14, 2004 - Kabir, the removal man, sometimes blind, always on the alert Antonella and Kabir, early in the morning, look angrily at each other - Kabir asks Antonella for the knife to cut coconuts; she, who was using it to get ready for fishing, gives it to him, but Kabir takes his time with it. Antonella loses patience, takes back the knife and cuts open Kabir's coconut. Carmen wakes up in tears because she's hungry. She says that if there is a hell, she is in it now and says she can't stand being on the island any longer. Patrizia says she should quit, but the others try to comfort her. Totò opens a coconut for her and cuts his finger... Patrizia suggests moving the place where they do their cooking to somewhere less exposed to the elements. Ana Laura and Antonella arrive at Antonella's 'secret' grotto. Ana Laura likes it very much but has to comfort Antonella who is terrified by the bats... Ana Laura confesses she joined the show because she thought her career was in decline and she didn't want to end it being a guest star on shows, but now, because of DJ Francesco, even that final opportunity is going up in smoke. Antonella says she joined because she was fed up with doing television and theatre and she is now in touch with nature. Back on the beach, Dj teaches fitness exercises to Aida and Patrizia. The "cooks' corner" is moved near a palm tree; Patrizia is happy. Kabir cuts coconuts. They all eat some, while Carmen devours her "personal coconut." Ana Laura says Carmen should win the leadership test so that Alessia and she have a breather on the island. The two friends tell Carmen that her hunger problem is psychological, but she says she had expected to see bananas and men who are able to fish. Nominees Alessia and Ana Laura stay behind during the leadership test. Alessia confesses that she really dislikes Carmen who keeps breaking down in tears and having panic attacks...
