| SUMMARY |
|
Varun
(Sanjay Dutt) uses his paranormal powers to help the suffering
and the infirm. Dr. Gayatri (Bipasha Basu) is a scientist who,
with her team, is looking for an explanation of paranormal phenomena.
She also does research on black magic and other ancient rituals.
In one of her many travels from the US, Dr. Gayatri hears about
Varun and his extraordinary gift in India, and decides to study
him. Varun agrees.
During the experiments that follow, Varun clashes with a strong,
evil power from the past that has its roots in the legend about
a particular rudraksh*, said to contain seeds that can change people
into an almost omnipotent super-being.
Although Varun tries as hard as he can to escape from the evil powers,
he also feels irresistibly drawn to them, and so he embarks on a
quest to discover the truth about the rudraksh.
In his journey, he comes to the snow-covered mountaintops of the
Himalayas and to the ruins of King Ravan’s palace, who is
described in the Ramayana as the powerful and evil ruler of the
kingdom
of
Lanka… |

QUICK BITS |
• *Rudraksh
- the tears of Lord Shiva
’Rudraksh’ is a combination of the words 'rudra' and 'aksha'.
'Rudra' stems from the
Sanskrit for 'weeping', and is also the ancient name of the
Lord Shiva.
'Aksha' means 'eye'.
According to legend, Rudra/Shiva wept when he beheld the man-built ‘triple
city’ of Tripura, which upset the divine balance between earth, the atmosphere
and heaven. He then took his bow and shot his arrows at the triple city to destroy
it.
But when Lord Shiva’s divine tear fell to earth, it turned into the rudraksh
plant – known to mortals as Elaeocarpus Sphaericus, the blue marble tree.
Today, the term ‘rudraksh’ refers both to this tree and to its sacred
seeds to which are attributed magical powers.
The bead-like seeds are used in chains and other jewelry that is worn on the
body. By chanting mantras the powers of the rudraksh are called into action to
protect the wearer from evil, sin etc, much like the Roman Catholic rosary or
the kolomboi, or worry beads, favoured by Greek men. The beans carry
'mukhis', or grooves, whose number is highly significant – especially a
'one mukhi rudraksh' is believed to hold great powers. Before wear, the rudraksh
is cleansed with milk, ghee or oil.
Rudraksh beads are supposed to be among the most powerful charms in Hinduism,
and symbolise divine mercy over man’s intransigence.
In the centre of the Rudraksh
movie poster there is a dark-brown rudraksh bead embedded in
filigrain. |
