| SUMMARY |
|
Kabir
plays the story of his own life as the embodiment of Sandokan.
Now a successful Bollywood film star, he travels to Italy to once
more become the Tiger of Mompracem to fulfill the wishes of a
sick
little girl. This time, however, the story has a twist as Kabir
gets involved with the Italian mafia...
Kabir confirmed in an interview that there are no tigers and no
unforgettable 'Perla di Labuan' in this untypical Sandokan movie.

PRODUCTION DIARY |
»September
2, 2002 - Kabir tells
me he is working on an Indo-Italian co-production which
is still in a pre-production stage. Actual filming still
has to begin... There is no further word on the project,
other than that it will probably start early next year.
»October 2002 - Kabir tells
me that he will probably start working on this project in early
February 2003.
»March 29, 2003 - Kabir speaks
publicly about the movie for the first time in an interview with
the Bombay newspaper Midday. "Sandokan in Sicily is reviving
Sandokan through the actor Kabir Bedi who played the character
and riding on his popularity to make a contemporary film," Kabir is
quoted as saying.
The actual filming is now scheduled to begin at the end of this year.
»June 7, 2003 - In the first-ever Indian-Italian
co-production since both countries signed a film co-operation
agreement, Kabir will
bring his world famous Sandokan back to life. According to the
report, shooting is to start in 2004 and Sandokan in Sicily will
contain musical acts - in the best of Bollywood tradition.
»June 13, 2003 - Producer Bhattacharya
has sealed the co-production deal for the film. It now has a
$4 million budget and it will be shot in English as well as Italian.
»July 12, 2003 - Accompanied by his wife
Nikki, Kabir arrives
by boat on the isle of Ischia as one of the first VIP guests
of the Ischia film festival - and is greeted by enthousiastic
crowds, including other VIPs, Italian press and a lot of Italian
fans. Among the many people who greet him is the President of
the Ischia International Arts Academy. Kabir also
replies to several interview questions about his new Sandokan
movie.
»February 14, 2005 - Sandokan in Sicily
is officially announced today in Mumbai, as
the first-ever Indo-Italian co-production. The film by director
Aaditya Bhattacharya is the first of a series of joint projects
being planned by the movie industries of both countries since
2002/2003. Many years ago, young Indian star Kabir
Bedi caused
a nationwide furore in Italy with his TV appearance in the cult
series SANDOKAN (1976).
Another two decades were to pass before Mira Nair's award-winning
Monsoon Wedding gave Italian audiences at the Venice Film Festival
another spectacular sample of what India has to offer in the
entertainment business. The long-awaited Indo-Italian Co-production
Treaty has now been signed in India by Italian Culture Minister
Giuliano Urbani and Indian Information and Broadcast Minister
Jaipal Reddy. Bhattacharya, the director of the Sandokan in Sicily
film, had this to say about the historic occasion: "The
Italians look at India as a logical partner in this co-production.
An effort is on to get the two industries to work together to
jointly create and distribute films that can reach a global audience. At
the end of it, it has cultural ramifications which will hopefully
also increase tourism between both countries." Among
the Italian delegation travelling to India were senior government
officials and managers of the state TV channel RAI. The visitors
were entertained over a light lunch, and Manmohan Shetty of Adlabs
showed them around the production studios of Film City in Mumbai.
