| SUMMARY |
|
The
soap Vivere (Living), which has been running since 1999, tells
the story
of a typical north Italian provincial town.
Just like anyone else,
the characters have their personal and work ambitions,
and there are family secrets, intrigue, fake marriages,
suffering, unrequited love, power games...
The main backdrops to the story are a hospital, old villas,
a lakeside restaurant and a police station. |

Kabir plays
in about four episodes the guest role of father of the young
waiter Amir - Emir Ibrahim Al-Daharan, an Arab royal.
Kabir's clothes
are by Caesar 1935.
Kabirs juwels are

Emir
Ibrahim, Amir's father, lives in a grand old villa on the shores
of Lake Como. Young Amir has come to the conclusion
that he has to level with his new girlfriend, Carolina,
and tell her about his family. So far, she has known
him only as a humble waiter at Giovanni Bonelli's restaurant.
Amir has been discussing his conundrum at length with
his boss, the restaurant owner, and has now plucked
up his courage to ask Carolina for dinner. He takes the innocent
young girl for a stroll through the villa's grounds, where they are
greeted by a servant. The timing is perfect for Amir to tell his
beloved that the grandiose dwelling is his own home...

Kabir's very first
scenes in Vivere:
With a good meal coming up – and that in Italy too – Emir
Kabir just has to be there!!!
Just in time for the magnificent engagement party of Amir and Carolina,
Kabir emerges from
a black limousine, flanked between his bodyguard and his chauffeur.
Oozing power and confidence, he sports his trademark
red silk scarf. His son Amir, bride-to-be Carolina and pretty much
the entire Como soap family are lined up on the castle's steps
to welcome the Arab ruler, a little bit shy but full of expectation.
Emir
Kabir is evidently displeased with his son – the two
have a difficult relationship, as Amir has told Carolina in an
earlier episode. But to the relief of his future daughter in law,
the worthy sovereign greets her warmly.
With Emir Kabir between
them, Amir and Carolina walk up the stairs to meet the waiting
guests, including Carolina's mother, who is
clearly ill at ease among so many important people.
Carolina's
ex-boyfriend, policeman Luca, can hardly disguise his jealous rage
when he sees Carolina and Amir happy together. Luca is warned by
his commanding officer to keep his personal feeelings under control
while on duty.
Will Luca be able to accept his former girlfriend's
newfound happiness at Amir's side?
Will matters come to a head,
and will Kabir have
a part to play in the confrontation?
Will Kabir take
off his red scarf in the next episode?
One thing is for certain:
the champers will be flowing...

Kabir has four scenes
in this episode.
Predictably, Vice Inspector Luca loses control
and makes a scene in front of Emir Kabir, Carolina
and Amir - and pretty much the whole Como cast. Cue Kabir,
who finally gets an opportunity to use that dark, bushy frown!
His
scarf, however, stays where it belongs, even if the look in Kabir's eyes makes you think he would gladly have used it to strangle Luca.
But an emir is above all that - and he saves the day with tact
and diplomacy.
Later, Amir introduces his father to his future mother-in-law.
She speaks of Carolina's ex-boyfriend Luca. Signora Canale must
be relieved to be rid of her kitchen mop hairdo - who, we ask,
would be willing to stand before the best Sandokan ever without
first paying a visit to the best hairdresser in town?
Surely Marianna, la Perla di Labuan,
would have done just that on Mompracem, had she been around today.

Kabir just
has a single scene, at the Como police headquarters.
Here, too,
Kabir and his red
silk scarf are not going to be separated.
Emir Kabir is
most upset about the scoundrel Luca, whose antics on the castle
steps have definitely gone too far. Although the
vice inspector has already lost his police badge and his gun, Emir
Kabir considers his
behaviour an insult to himself and his family, and turns the case
into a diplomatic row. Luca was responsible for
the Emir´s security, and his behaviour brought his office
into disrepute and exposed the Arab royals to potential danger.
Kabir tells Luca's
commanders that the hothead now deserves nothing less than a suspension
- or a transfer, which would make sure he
is far away from Carolina, Amir and the royal family.
Kabir having refused
the kind offer of a straight, wooden chair, the talks are conducted
on foot, with Luca unceremoniously sent
off shortly after the emir´s arrival. Luca's immediate superior
and mentor, Commissioner Leone, is not looking forward to losing
his best man to some spleepy police outpost in the provinces. But
Kabir does his best
Sandokan frown, and a transfer seems inevitable for young Luca.
Finally, prince Amir enters the room.
Those of
us who have seen the trailers know we are now heading for a large
banquet, presided over by Kabir.
But
first, we in the audience will drink to the Vivere cameraman for
his excellent close-ups
of ex-Sandokan Kabir!
Vivere
knows... it´s a woman thing...

Kabir has a
single scene, a "meet and greet" in Bonelli's restaurant, oozing
charm all over the modest eatery where his son
once found
employment
as a waiter. Bonelli wheels out his camera, and happily takes dozens
of snaps of a beaming Kabir and his fellow cast.
Only Carolina's mother looks a little dejected. She knows how torn
her daughter, the doe-eyed Carolina, is between her old lover and
her new prince. Carolina has told her she wants to leave Como,
in what is clearly a bad joke by the script writers! Judging by
her following on Italian fan forums, Carolina is hugely popular,
and her fans were horrified. But don't worry - it was a false
alarm, and we will soon be seeing a big party presided over by
Kabir!
Kabir is in excellent
mettle today, his red scarf ironed to silky-smooth perfection,
and finally gets to do his romatic routine, as well
as his famous "hmm..."

Kabir has 2 scenes,
a banquet scene and a scene with soon-to-be daughter-in-law Carolina.
Kabir, the charming
head of the family, gives his very best in the two scenes.
He hosts
the official engagement banquet, although
the monster pineapple on the table keeps getting in the way, and
warmly welcomes Carolina in his family.
They have a hearty man-to-woman
talk, about love in general, and son Amir and his doe-eyed belle
in particular. Kabir tells
Carolina it is important to make the right decision, and be happy
not only at the beginning of a relationship, but forever.
Kabir takes very
warmly to his future daughter-in-law, and says she will make Amir
a very happy man. Like any father, he wants
only the best for his son, but Carolina´s happiness is just
about as important to him, Kabir says.
When Carolina says she loves Amir with her whole heart, Kabir is
visibly relieved.
He officially presents her with a pearl the size
of a bird´s egg, which
he says has been in the family since time immemorial. Kabir expresses
the wish that the young couple´s love should always be as
pure and radiant as the pearl.
Kabir's face is often
filmed too darkly in this scene.
It would be helpful if some of
that pearl's shine rubbed off
on the lighting technicians!
At police HQ, a despondent and jealous Luca watches the live press
conference by the emir, Prince Amir and his own former girlfriend.
He can barely bring himself to listen as reporters ask the young
couple about their plans for the wedding and their imminent departure
from Como, as well as their honeymoon. Once again, Luca is warned
to calm down by his boss and mentor. But what the policeman does
not know, is that Carolina isn't quite as sure about her
feelings for Amir as she pretends!
There's to be more Kabir in this soap opera yet - and it
will take another few episodes until his red scarf no longer lights
up on our screens...
#1660 - May 11, 2006
Kabir had been announced
to appear in this episode in several Italian TV-magazines, but
the depicted scene of Kabir with
Carolina was broadcast instead a few days later, on May 16.

First, there is a brief shot of Kabir's framed photograph
in Bonelli's restaurant.
Towards the end of the episode, Kabir has
a scene:
Just imagine, the doorbell rings, you open,
and there's Kabir standing
on the doorstep of your humble abode...
That's just what happens
to Carolina's mother as Kabir visits
her to talk about her daughter and his son Amir. Completely
overwhelmed, Carolina's mother does what many - but not all - would
do in her place: she invites the Emir into her apartment.
By a
flick of the royal hand, the royal bodyguards are commanded to
wait outside. This is to be a heart-to-heart conversation about
Carolina's last-minute decision to leave her fiance Amir
for ex-boyfriend Luca. The Emir's view is that such life-changing
matters should be discussed among adults - or so they would be
back home - but Signora Canale makes it clear that Carolina is
no longer a child, and indeed the young woman listens in on the
conversation. Emir Kabir isn't
at all convinced that Carolina acted out of love for Luca. He thinks
Carolina panicked, and shied
away from the duties and responsibilities that would have come
with a marriage into the royal family. Finally, Carolina can no
longer be silent, and addresses Emir Kabir to
give her point of view.
Will Kabir believe
Carolina, who says she loves Luca and
not his beloved son Amir?
Will he fly into a rage and throttle
the doe-eyed girl with his silk scarf?
Will Carolina return the
giant pearly heirloom?
#1663 - May 16, 2006 - Download of Kabir's
scene: #1
- 69 MB
Kabir has a scene
at Carolina's home, right at the beginning of the episode.
Carolina's
mother is silent. It is now her daughter's
turn to speak. She tells Emir Kabir she is deeply sorry to have
caused Amir so much suffering. But she cannot possibly marry the
sweet and well-mannered prince. She loves her former fiance Luca.
Kabir urges her to think hard, because with his son at her side
she will be leading the life of a princess.
- "One day, you will
be queen," he says.
But it's no use.
Even the prospect of having Kabir Bedi for a father-in-law cannot
convince doe-eyed Carolina.
She says Amir is a most excellent prince,
but that he needs a wife who truly loves him - and it ain't
her.
Saddened but convinced after the direct conversation with
Carolina, he kisses the ladies' hands and prepares to take
his leave - but wait!
There's something else!
Carolina gets out the jewelry box with the pearl she had been given
by the Emir, and is about to return it to him like a good little
girl. But Kabir,
ever the gentleman, refuses to take the jewel home with
him. Carolina's honesty and purity is every bit as radiant
as the pearl, he says, and offers it to her once more with the
wish that she may be happy.
Kabir's last shot
is a wideangle view of his noble visage, framed by the famous trademark
red scarf.
Carolina later clears
the air with the unhappy Amir during a walk in the palace garden.
They wish each other all the best and much happiness.
When Carolina is back with her recycled beau Luca, the policeman
pulls out two rings. They are nothing like as grand as Kabir's pearl, but little does it matter:
this, we realise, is True Love!
Luca asks Carolina to be his wife.
With tears of joy, the princess-to-be-no-longer
breathes a gentle but definite "Si!"
-
- "You don't want to look like an idiot," Kabir chuckled
as he told kabir-bedi.com late January 2006 about
the surprise that had been sprung on him during the
shooting in Como the previous month. Originally, only a short guest
appearance had been planned for Kabir,
but it soon transpired that the producers were hoping
to use him for several episodes.
After all, Kabir has star
status in Italy as much as anywhere else!
This meant that Kabir had
to memorise
many pages of Italian dialog at very short notice - soaps are traditionally
dialog-heavy, and Italians aren't known for being silent
types...
At
a December 17, 2005 press conference in Como, Kabir says
about his role: "I will play the part of Ibrahim
Al-Darham, a 'good' character, who is integrated and at ease
in the 'community' of Vivere.
I can't reveal anything, but there
will certainly also be a love story." |

| YUM! |
|
|
+ Adriana,
or Sara Ricci, a very likeable lead actress with a very expressive face, who has been in the series since early 1999.
+ There are also a few attractive male stars, such as golf and boating fan Massimo,
with wild hair and full of rustic charm, and the kind hospital-doctor-next-door,
with his fascinating sky blue eyes... It hardly comes as a surprise that both
are vying for Adriana's attentions!
+ When Adriana's fingers caress the keyboard, at home or at the office,
there is many an Italian viewer who wouldn't mind being her laptop...
+ But there is also a bitch-in-residence - a dark-eyed, dark-haired and dark-souled
female doctor who hatches evil plots because the object of her desires, the curly
rustic,
spurns her advances... - He later turns out to be her ex-husband, and he has
an agenda of his own! |

|
 |
| EEK! |
|
|
- In
every episode, the heroine makes a great show of playing with
her opulent black hair while looking profoundly into the distance.
- All exterior shots look stilted and stagey.
- Extras are in far too low supply for the scenes to be at all
convincing. Actually, you can help! Vivere takes applications from
extras.
- The action is pretty farfetched (but hey, it's a soap opera).
- Vivere's fans were left gutted when no fewer than three of the
soap's best-loved stars were written out of the story in one quick
move, emigrating to some distant shore.
- Hackneyed acting: one of the not-so-nice characters is trying
so hard to snarl all the time that he must be having permanently
sore facial muscles.
- One of the female leads sports a sand-coloured hairdo that resembles
a used floor mop or a second-hand paintbrush.
However,
in more recent episodes,
the floor mop - but not its character- has fallen victim to another
turn of the plot. Carolina's mother now wears a short, trendy "pixie" hairdo
that could have been copied from Halle Berry. |

|
 |
| IN

There
is much profound staring, sighing and gesturing in this soap
opera, with a pretty far-fetched plot, set in a north Italian

PRODUCTION DIARY |
»December 17,
2005 - Press conference with Kabir Bedi at the
Villa Olmo, Como:
-- Love is in the air for Kabir in Italian soap 'Vivere'
--
Kabir has
announced another comeback to the Italian small screen
with his appearance as an amorous Arab royal in
the soap opera "Vivere" ("Living")
shooting on the shores of Lake Como.
At a December 17
press conference in the northern Italian resort, Kabir said: "I
will play the part of Ibrahim Al-Darham, a 'good' character,
who is integrated and at
ease in the 'community' of Vivere. I can't reveal anything,
but there will certainly also be a love story."
Kabir's Vivere episodes will be aired in the spring of
2006 by Canale 5, one of the TV channels of Italian media
tycoon - and Prime Minister - Silvio Berlusconi.
Following
his appearance the ISOLA DEI FAMOSI reality
show and the Italian movie A+R
ANDATA + RITORNO,
Kabir said he welcomed the opportunity to appear as "special
guest" in an Italian soap, which he said are every
bit as exciting as their US counterparts. "It was
an experience which I missed and which I never had time
to enjoy.
After Isola dei Famosi I shot two films in India and
took part in a major production in the UK.
Vivere to me is an occasion to do something in Italy.
I played in [THE BOLD AND THE] BEAUTIFUL and
in GENERAL HOSPITAL and I think Italian soaps
have nothing to
be ashamed
of compared with US ones."
- "My career has
always been based on popular parts," Kabir added. "They are parts that I love because the rapport
with the viewers is stronger and is bigger than the biggest
award you could get." The series' artistic director,
Bruno Stefani, said Kabir will be one of several new faces
to appear in the programme
next year, including an entire family.
They will all be played by well-known actors, Stefani said
without giving any names.
Kabir said his father often came
to Lake Como when he was living in Milan. "I think he knew all the restaurants!"
According to local newspaper Corriere Di Como, Kabir's meeting with the press at the historic Villa Olmo was quite
a grand affair.
- "Kabir Bedi,
smiling, in a crimson shirt, with his ever-present
scarf around his neck,
was relaxed
in the
luxurious gardens created by Pliny the Younger, as he allowed
the photographers to immortalise him against the poetic
backdrop and, later, in the rooms of the neoclassical building
where Napoleon and the emperors of Austria once set foot."
The paper said Kabir had
to struggle through a big throng of media people to get to
the table.
Kabir was invited to next year's Festival Lago di Como, along
with the rest of the cast.
- "Kabir
Bedi will
always be in Italian hearts as SANDOKAN and IL
CORSARO NERO.
Is there anyone in the generation of 30-40 year-olds who
does not have the Pirate of Malaysia in their heart?" the
paper said.
»January 20, 2006 - Taken aback
by all the publicity,
Kabir confirms
he has been invited to the Lago di Como Festival 2006,
but tells kabir-bedi.com that he has "not
-yet- confirmed his attendance."
»Late January 2006 - "You don't
want to look like an idiot," Kabir chuckles
as he told me in January 2006 about
the surprise that had been sprung on him during the
shooting in Como the previous month. Originally, only a short
guest appearance had been planned for Kabir,
but it soon transpired that the producers were hoping
to use him for several episodes.
After all, Kabir has star status
in Italy as much as anywhere else!
This meant that Kabir had to memorise
many pages of Italian dialog at very short notice - soaps are traditionally dialog-heavy,
and Italians aren't known for being silent types...
»February 24, 2006 - About four
episodes with guest star Kabir are
scheduled to be broadcast from mid of April 2006 on Canale
5, Italy.
»Mid-April
2006 - Vivere's producers release new trailers
with clips from Kabir's guest
appearance in the series. Kabir is billed as a 'special
guest among the cast'.
»April 26, 2006 - Today is Kabir's very
first appearance in Vivere, episode #1650.
»May 16, 2006 - Today, Kabir's last
scenes in Vivere were broadcast, in episode #1663. |
