| SUMMARY |
|
A
spoilt and arrogant - but pretty unsuccessful - Hollywood actress
comes to India to shoot a run-of-the-mill Western. At the last
moment, however, the shooting is cancelled and our blase star
has no money for her flight back to Hollywood. She gets to know
a Bollywood dance tutor (Khan), who lands her a part in the movie
Pyar Bina Kya Zindagi. As in all Bollywood movies, there
is plenty of dancing to be done. But alas, our heroine is no Ginger
Rogers, and she needs someone to teach her the art of Indian dance.
Fancy that - she already knows one! And as the two work on their
dance routines, their close physical contact brings them together
personally.
The second half of the movie is more concerned with social issues
than with the Bollywood glitterati.
Marigold and her friend travel to his family in Rajasthan,
where
she meets his large circle of friends and his very traditionally
minded parents. Prem had not told Marigold that he is a prince
of a royal family...
Clearly there are some cultural barriers to be
taken before our couple can dance into the sunset together - or
maybe not... |

of Lagaan and Devdas fame, will be responsible for the
art design. •
Farah Khan,
a successful choreographer/director with a long Bollywood
and international career, had promised to do the choreography
for Marigold

work as a first-time director on Kabir’s new
film
MAIN
HOON NA which went on to become a world success
in 2004.
• Indian film star Preity Zinta (see Kabir’s film THE

by the Bollywood bug, Carroll loved the wedding scene with dances by Salman
Khan as Raj Malhotra. He then saw more than 100 Bollywood DVDs and resolved
to make a movie with Salman Khan.

PRODUCTION DIARY |
»August 15,
2002 - Industry magazine Variety announces Marigold
and says Salman Khan is to play the leading male part.
Sidharth Jain, vice president of the new Indian production
company, says Marigold will be a truly 50:50 co-production
between India and the US. He says the movie will reflect
what both countries are best at in making films.
»Autumn 2002 – Shooting is to begin
in February 2003 and last 11 weeks.
»August 26, 2002 – According to
an interview with the three composers, Marigold will be made
in an English and a Hindi version. The English version is to
be made first. In both versions, Marigold, the American heroine,
will speak almost only English. The actress playing her is to
be announced in four weeks. There is still no word on who will
write the English song texts. The composer triumvirate is to
complete the Hindi songs by February 2003. The job isn’t
easy: the composers argue that Hindi texts set to Western music
sound silly, while the reverse is just plain ridiculous. They
are also calling for new singers to be recruited.
»August 27, 2002 – According to
galatta.com, the film is to be premiered in February 2003.
»September 1, 2002 – South Africa’s
Sunday Times says in a short story about Salman Khan that the
search for someone to play the heroine of Marigold is still on.
»September 2, 2002 - The
movie is in pre-production stage. Actual filming still has to
begin... Kabir will
work on it from December 2002/January 2003 onwards.
»Late September 2002 - Salman Khan says
in an interview he has joined in the work on the screenplay for
nine months and many of his ideas have been used. Khan says making
a musical has always been one of his ambitions.
»September 28 2002 - Salman Khan is arrested
after a hit-and-run accident. Driving at night and at high speed,
he loses control over his Toyota Land Cruiser and runs into a
group of people sleeping in the street near a Bombay bakery.
One dies and four are injured. Khan is made to take a breathalyzer
test but is later released on bail. This is not his first brush
with the law – among other incidents, he allegedly shot
and killed an endangered animal in a national park during filming
in Rajasthan. He also made headlines for his alleged ill treatment
of his partner and star Aishwarya Rai on a film set. In Bombay,
there are public burnings of his movie posters in the autumn
of 2002. Chances are a new lead actor will need to be found.
»September
30, 2002 - Salman Khan about Marigold: "I
think Willard Carroll will be able to portray India and Asian
culture
the way it should be portrayed."
»
Early/Mid-October
2002 - Salman Khan
is banned from travelling abroad and to some parts of India.
He is alleged to have been driving without a licence and under
the influence of alcohol. Salman is summoned to appear in court
on October 7.
»Late October 2002 - Kabir says
there have been no changes to the cast…
»Mid-October 2002 – Director Willard
Carroll travels to India to discuss the situation. Siddharth
Jain says Salman Khan is still to play in the movie, and denies
rumours he is being replaced by Shah Rukh Khan.
»November 10, 2002 - Carroll meets Salman
Khan upon his release and says in an interview that Salman himself
has offered to withdraw from the movie if his arrest should compromise
the project. Carroll also says he has met with Aamir Khan, Shah
Rukh Khan and Vivek Oberoi to discuss future movie projects.
For the first time in his life, Carroll is to visit Rajasthan
to look for likely sets. He intends to hire further Indian actors
for the secondary parts. He also says the planned Hindi version
of Marigold is now off, and the search for an actress to play
the heroine is continuing.
Shooting for the English-only Marigold is now to begin in March 2003.
»November 13, 2002 - apunkachoice.com
also reports that Carroll sees no reason to replace Salman Khan
because of the recent events.
»January 12, 2003 – Salman Khan’s
role in the Indo-American movie Marigold is a boost not only
to Hollywood-Bollywood reations but also to Khan’s own
career, despite his troubled private life. He is in talks about
several new films, including a remake of the Guru Dutt classic
Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, a film entitled Bagbaan and another, with
the working title of Lucky (to be filmed on location in Russia),
which his brother Sohail Khan is going to produce.
»February
7, 2003 - Vice-president Siddharth Jain, Hyperion Films,
will not reveal the name of the female lead in Marigold. He says,
that director Carroll will announce the cast on February 10,
2003 in Mumbai. Apparently, Hyperion is in talks with Kareena
Kapoor for the lead role.
The filmmakers are currently also talking to Hollywood stars
like Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd for the part. »February
24, 2003 - After many weeks
of rumours, it looks as if Shah Rukh Khan will substitute for
Salman Khan in the lead role after all, but there is still no
confirmation from the producers. Salman Khan himself has paved
the way for his replacement by saying he cannot guarantee that
he will be able to meet the tight shooting schedule because of
his court case.
»February
28, 2003 - apunkachoice.com reports today that
Salman Khan will play the lead - as planned. According to Siddharth
Jain, Salman Khan has allotted 90 days to shoot the movie in
the forthcoming months and also, he will be available exclusively
for Marigold during that time. »
March
2, 2003 - In an article about successful
international film stars, Salman Khan is again named in connection
with Marigold. Shooting is said to start soon.
»March 12, 2003 - Kabir mentions
his film Marigold - still with Salman Khan - in a Bombay-datelined

minded patriarch, head of a royal family, in Rajasthan'.
»June 12, 2003 - Salman Khan is in Los
Angeles on June 7, 2003 to participate in the 'Megastar Mania
Show'. In an interview to The Times of India, he
mentions Marigold to be his Hollywood debut movie and he also
talks about
his controversial decision, being a Muslim himself, to portray
the Hindu god Rama in a forthcoming movie.
»June 20, 2003 - Componist trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
have composed two songs for the movie.
»June 26, 2003 - Indiainfo.com reports that Salman
Khan will commence shooting for Marigold and filming is scheduled
to continue six to nine weeks.
»September 25, 2003 - Casting for the female lead
and the boyfriend she leaves behind in Los Angeles is under way
in the US, according to a variety.com report from today. Marigold
will be pitched at the forthcoming MIFED movie
market in Milan, Italy, (November 9-13, 2003) as the first real
'Hollywood meets Bollywood' movie. Filming
still has to start - newly scheduled to start in January 2004
on location in Mumbai, with a couple of days shooting in Los
Angeles.
»October 1, 2003 - Financial difficulties are
over: Hyperion will now make Marigold in a joint venture with
Australian firm Becker
Films International.
In a press release of today,
Reiko Bradley, president of Becker Films International,
is enthousiastic
about Marigold: "I fell madly in love - appropriately enough
- with Willard's fresh take on the romantic comedy genre. I
believe that everyone will be charmed by this hilarious and
hip fish-out-of-water story, while being completely dazzled
by the colorful Bollywood-style dance sequences."
Siddharth Jain (Hyperion Pictures) adds, "the Indian movie
industry sees Marigold as the opportunity to present a positive
view
of Bollywood to the West."
Nitin Desai,
of Lagaan and Devdas fame, will be responsible for the art design.
Still no actress announced to play the female lead.
Filming is scheduled to start early 2004. Seven
songs have been composed, lyrics by 'Los Angeles pop-icon' Shari
Watson (Truth Hurts), her cross-cultural mix 'Addictive' was
a mega dance hit in 2002.
