Kabir rides Marwari-horses in the Sandokan mini-series which
was filmed on location in India.
In Il Ritorno di Sandokan
this is almost the only kind of horse you will see.
Marwaris
are an ancient Indian type of walking horses, which
used to be bred for their courage in battle but nowadays
are quite rare.
There are no Marwaris in Europe because
they cannot be exported from India. However, 10 Marwari
horses were exported to the US.
Marwaris have a peculiar
lateral gait which is typical of the breed.
This means, saddled they will often walk in a cadence of
four but also in a
walk or pass rhythm, depending upon their temperament.
This Indian horse is easily recognised
from the unusual position of its ears (see picture above),
which is clearly
visible in many of the scenes from Il Ritorno di Sandokan.
They
are comfortable even for non-riding experts like film stars.
Unfortunately,
Kabir is slightly
too tall to be riding this breed.
The
rather high stirrups you see in the movie
cannot have been too comfortable for him.
However, many
of the Sandokan riding scenes were shot using the Italian
double/stuntman Claudio Pacifico, so not every Sandokan
is the real thing!
But since Claudio Pacifico is about
the same size as Kabir - being his double - he won't have
been much more comfortable either...
In Kabir's first Sandokan
film (1976) there are no Marwari horses.
Stars like John Wayne, William Shatner, Ophrah
Winfrey, Bruce Willis and Juliane Werding also worked
with walking horses.
(Many, many thanks to Carolin Klaus in Germany.
Carolin
is a walking horse expert and Executive Director of the
European Tennessee Walking Horse Association.
There are
about 400
Tennessee
Walker horses in Europe, a north American walking horse
breed.
